OBITUARY

MR A. J. HILLIER. By Telegrap-—Press Association WELLINGTON, March 16. Mr Alfred John Hillier, better known to some people as “Bobs,” because of bis likeness to the late Lord Roberts, died in the Wellington Hospital, aged 68 years. Mr Hillier was a member of one of the Australian test teams which played against Grace’s English team, at Sydney, about half a century ago. MR J. S. CONNETT. By Telegraph—Press Association NEW PLYMOUTH, March 16. The death occurred at Auckland this morning of Mr J. S. Connett, aged 64. He was chairman of the Taranaki County and a prominent figure in the public life of North Taranaki. He was a director of the Farmers’ Fertiliser Coy., chairman of the North Committee of the Egmont National Park Board, president of the Taranaki Local Bodies’ Association, and prominent in the Taranaki Agricultural Society’s activities, and chairman of the Taranaki County for the last 19 years. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs R. L. Barclay, Waitara. Mr Connett’s father was a pioneer settler of the Bell Block district. MR CHARLES FRANCIS WARD. By Telegraph—Press Association BLENHEIM, March 16. The death is announced of Mr Charles Francis Ward, one of New Zealand’s oldest colonists, in his 81st year. He was the oldest surviving relative of Archbishop Redwood, whose jubilee celebration he attended. He was the sixth son of the late Mr Joseph Ward, a Nelson pioneer, who came out from Home in 1842. Deceased was born at Ditchley, Waimea, West Nelson, and came to Marlborough as a young boy. He was educated privately at the Brookby Station, which his father had taken up, and later attended Father Garvi’s historic Catholic School in Nelson. His education completed he spent some time on his father’s Quail Flat property, in the Kaikoura district, and after that had commercial experience as a member of the staff of Messrs Edwards and Bennett, merchants, Christchurch. When his father acquired the Tytler run, deceased undertook the management along with the Quail Flat property. On the sale of these stations Mr Ward went south to manage his mother’s property at Tuturau, Southland. Whilst there he purchased Mr Maunsell’s Lilybank run. He married Miss Mary Ann Hailes, eldest daughter of Mr Walter Hailes. Mr Ward at this time took an active interest in local politics, and was chairman of the Tuturau Road Board, and served on other local and public bodies. Selling out at Tuturau, he acquired a place at Gore and then returned to Marlborough, entering into partnership with his brother, Mr Gilbert Ward at the Brancott Station. He had been in retirement lor many years. He was a member of the committee of the Marlborough Racing Club, and the Blenheim Bowling Club. His only son died on war service. He is survived by four daughters. MR HERBERT G. KERSLAKE. By Telegraph—Press Association LEVIN, March 16. The death has occurred of Mr Herbert George Kerslake, aged 51, one of the best known provincial journalists, managing-director of Kerslake and Billins Ltd., proprietors of the “Levin Daily Chronicle” and the “Otaki Mail” and also a director of the “Manawatu Daily Times.” Palmerston North.
