WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

WASHDYKE. At the monthly meeting of the Washdyke Women’s Institute Mrs Glenday presided over an excellent attendance. Mrs McDuff, Miss A. Phillips, Miss A. Kellahan and Miss J. Pearce were elected members. An invitation from Seadown Institute for four members to attend a garden party was accepted. Mrs Doak and Mrs Brown were elected delegates to the half-yearly meeting. The president’s prize for most points during the year was won by Mrs D. Wilson. The president expressed thanks to all who had given help during the year, especially the secretary and treasurer. A demonstration of sewing machine parts was very keenly followed. Officers were elected as follows: President, Miss Eliza Cartwright; vicepresident, Mrs J. Gaffaney; secretary, Mrs H. Taylor; treasurer, Mrs Brown; committee, Mesdames Dawe, Phillips, James, Hansen, Darling, Pearce, Burrell, Misses Ramsay and Connolly. The hostesses for the day were Mesdames Gaffaney, Darling, Clarke, and Miss Connolly.

HILTON.

In the Hilton Hall on Thursday the Women's Institute held a kitchen afternoon to honour the first Institute bride, Miss Mona Chester. The time was spent in games, musical items, and competitions. Misses G. Brenton and M. Wilks contributed pianoforte selections while Mrs H. H. Brosnahan and

Miss D. Scott gave vocal solos. Mrs L. Beattie was the winner of a competition, “A Walk Through Hilton.” Afternoon tea was supplied and served by members, after which the president, Mrs Brosnahan, asked the bride-elect to accept the gifts brought by members and assured her of the good wishes of all for her future happiness. Mrs Fletcher presented Miss Chester with a bouquet and others who spoke conveying good wishes to the brideelect were Mesdames C. Wilks and L. Beattie .Misses Hewson and Pierce. Miss Chester suitably replied thanking members for their gifts and good wishes.

GLEN-ITI.

The president (Mrs Winnington) occupied the chair at the first annual meeting of the Glen-iti Women’s Institutee. An apology was received from Mrs B. Tripp. Miss B. Elliott was elected as a new member. The annual report showed a very satisfactory and successful year, the membership having steadily increased. Demonstrations of sewing, cooking and first aid had been given, and to the demonstrators, the hostesses and Mr and Mrs D. Ramsay who had attended to many little duties in connection with the preparation of the library before meetings, thanks were due. During the year a presentation was made to the first Institute bride, Mrs Wallace (nee Elsie Anderson), Mrs Ballantyne, mother of the first Institute baby. Donations had been made to the Library Committee and School Committee in recognition of the support they had given. The ballot for the new committee resulted.—Mrs Winnington (president), Mrs W. Browne and Mrs E. G. Selbie (vice-presidents), Mrs W. S. Curr (secretary), Mrs A. Jackson (treasurer), committee, Mesdames Finlay, D. Ramsay, Hull, Rawson, Loomes, McDonald and Phillips. The Misses Gilliatts acted as scrutineers. Miss Southgate demonstrated tapestry stitches and the Misses Gilliatts exhibited some very fine work. Votes of thanks were passed to Mrs Curr (secretary), Mrs Jackson (treasurer), and the outgoing committee. The competitions for the day were won as follows;—Oven scones, Mrs Underhill 1, Mrs Hull and Mrs Curr 2 equal, Mrs W. Browne and Mrs McConnell equal 3. Men’s hand-knitted socks, Mrs W. Browne 1, Mrs L. Clarke 2, Mrs Geo. Clarke 3. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Stevens, B. McArthur, Breeze, Esler and Miss F. Pearse. Mrs Rawson and Mrs Curr are the dt gates to the Federation meeting at Geraldine.

TYCHO

At the annual meeting of the Tycho Women’s Institute, Mrs Morrison presided over a good attendance of members. Mrs H. Marshall and Miss E. Jones were appointed delegates to the annual Federati6n meeting. The annual report showed a successful and interesting year’s work, and the balance-sheet indicated a satisfactory financial position. Mrs Morrison thanked the members for their loyal support. The election of a committee resulted: —Mrs C. T. Stewart (president), Mrs McLeod (vice-president), Mrs A. Marshall (secretary), Mrs McCaw (treasurer), Mrs Morrison, Mrs P. Talbot and Miss McPhedran. The roll call was “Suggestions for the programme.” The competitions resulted:—Nutloaf, Mrs P. Talbot 1, Mrs Smith 2, Mrs C. Talbot 3. Asters, Mrs McPhedran 1, Mrs P. Talbot 2, Mrs C. Talbot and Miss McLeod equal 3. Premier bloom. —Mrs McLeod and Mrs Smith equal 1. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the hostesses, Mrs P. Talbot, Mrs White and Miss McPhedran.
