After 20 years’ service. Mr John Rowe has resigned from the Auckland Hospital Board, owing to ill-health. Mr J. J. McLeod, manager of the Union Bank of Australia, left Te Kuiti last week on transfer to Blenheim.

Major P. Kerr-Smiley, well-known as an owner of racehorses, arrived at Auckland from Australia last week. He hopes to again enjoy good fishing at Taupo, and probably some deepsea fishing also. The Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes) arrived in Christchurch from Wellington yesterday. He attended the Ashburton Trotting meeting and will go to Hanmer to-day and later to his farm at Cheviot, z The appointment of Mr A. 6. Elworthy as a member of the Board of Trustees under the Christchurch Racecourse Reserve Act, in place of Mr R. M. D. Morten, is announced in the Gazette. Mr K. B. Myers, son of the late Sir Arthur Myers, has been appqinted to the board of directors of the South British Insurance Company. Limited, in place of the late Mr A. B. Roberton. Mr W. H. Walmsley. who has been chief clerk for the railways at Tauranga for the last four years, has received notice of his transfer on promotion to the district office at Ohakune. Mr L. S. Orr, who has held the position of assistant clerk to the Masterton County Council, has been appointed to a similar position with the Manawatu County Council, and will take up his new duties early in the New Year. There was a large gathering of business men and others at the Whangarel Rotary Club's rooms last week, when Mr C. F Collins, retiring headmaster of the Whangarei Primary School, was the guest of honour. On behalf of those present Mr L. A. Johnson presented Mr Collins with a silver tea service. Mr Gordon J. Reid, who is retiring from the service of the Commercial Union Assurance Company. Ltd., was. at the final meeting of the directors for this year, the recipient of a personal presentation from the board, the members of which expressed their good will to Mr Reid and wished him many years of happiness. An inscribed chiming clock was presented to Mr and Mrs W. F. KentJohnston by the board of managers of the Hamilton Y.M.C.A. The president. Mr F. Findlay, expressed appreciation of the servioes rendered to the institution by Mr and Mrs Kent-Johnston during their stay in Hamilton, and wished them success for the future. Mr and Mrs Kent-Johnston and family leave shortly for Christchurch. At the final meeting for the year of the Northcote Borough Council, the Mayor. Mr R. Martin, and members and officials said farewell to Mr H. W. Wilson, who has retired from the position of town clerk, borough treasurer and returning officer after nearly 13 years’ service at Northcote and 55 years in municipal work, Mr Wilson entered the office of the town clerk of Dunedin as a'cadet, and before going to Northcote was town clerk of Auckland for 20 years.

Mr John Connell, who has just obtained his Bachelor of Commerce degree. is only 19 years of age. and is considered to be the youngest student of Victoria University College to obtain this degree. The remarkable thing about his success is that he obtained it in three years of study, and this while he was employed by the National Mutual Life Association of Australasia, Ltd. In addition to obtaining his B Com. degree. Mr Connell also managed to pass five examinations for his insurance diploma. He is an ex-pupil of Rongotal College.
