FIXTURES FOR THE HOLIDAYS
CARNIVAL ON BAY FULL PROGRAMME OF EVENTS Possessed of one of the finest beaches in the Dominion, and well supplied with sports grounds, Timaru has much to offer the visitor during the holidays. Few towns or cities in the Dominion can boast of bathing facilities such as are to be had on Caroline Bay, which will be the Mecca of hundreds in the weeks that be ahead. From Boxing Day onwards, the Caroline Bay Association's annual carnival will be in full swing, and every endeavour is being made by the Association to ensure that this year’s funtion will eclipse all previous efforts. There will be numerous stalls, while for the children fancy dress and sandmodelling competitions will be promoted. A concert party from Dunedin will appear each afternoon and evening, while the presence of the local bands should brighten proceedings considerably. A dance will also be held each evening in the Bay Hall. Tennis Tournament. The South Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s annual tournament will commence on Boxing Day, and there is every indication that record entries will be received. The Maori Park courts, where the tournament will be staged, are in excellent order, and the public can be assured of high-class tennis. For Bowlers. As in former years, the South Canterbury Bowling Centre’s Christmas tournament will commence on Christmas Day. The rinks will be played on the first day, the doubles on the second, the finals on the third, and the singles on the fourth day. Entries are coming in well, and an enjoyable time is assured. New Year Sports. On New Year's Day the South Canterbury Caledonian Society will hold their annual sports. As In former years, a comprehensive programme has been arranged, and with competitors from outside. centres having signified their intention of participating, some splendid contests should be witnessed. Cricket Matches. Cricket enthusiasts will also be well catered for, as the local representatives have been drawn to meet the Wellington Colts touring team on December 29 and 30, and they will play the Canterbury representatives on January 1 and 2. Angling. Apart from the various activities in the town, which form a fairly full round of events, visitors who are keen fishermen will find plenty of sport in the various rivers. Splendid conditions have prevailed of late, and with a continuation of fine weather, all the rivers should be in good order during the holidays.
