A case of some interest to racing circles was decided in the Police Court when Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., convicted Alfred Randle Hucklebridge of working at his calling on Sunday, November 12, the fact being that defendant conveyed racehorses in his float from Christchurch to Wingatui. The defence was that the work was necessary. Part of the defence’s evidence was that railways ran special trains on Sundays for the conveyance of racehorses. The Magistrate remarked that tne evidence of rail traffic was rather against defendant’s case. In convicting he was not laying down a general rule regarding the use of floats on Sunday for there were cases in the country where such transportation appeared to be necessary, but the only thing involved here was the expense of keeping horses in Christchurch over Sunday. WIN MACHINE ABOLISHED. By Telegraph—Press Association MARTON, December 13. The committee of the Marton Jockey Club decided unanimously to adopt the special tote regulations, and abolish the win machine as follows:—Nine or more horses, three dividends of 70, 20 and 10 per cent.
