THE BURDEN OF THE UNFIT.
To the Editor of " The Timaru Herald “ Sir, —Every farmer and gardener who knows his business, seeks to improve the strain of his stock and produce by rejecting the inferior, and cultivating only those kinds which, in his opinion, promise the most profitable results, otherwise his adherence to obsolete methods, or sentimentalism, w’ould put him hopelessly out of the race. I understand that Germany, a recognised formidable competitor for national supremacy, both physical and mental, has determined to extend this rule to her population. Tills means that all other nations must either follow suit, or submit to the inevitable decadence which, a decade later, will prove to be a handicap almost, if not absolutely insuperable. So far all nations have been carrying the same handicap. Increased population, especially in the citizens of this Dominion, and quite regardless of fitness, has always been the Government’s objective, and the result, one is shamed to relate, that during the war thousands of men of military age were found to be physically or mentally ineligible for active service. In Germany these problems are decided by Hitler. It is too late for the British Empire to lead in this matter, therefore, however humiliating it may be we must either follow Hitler or eventually be driven by him. What other choice have we?—l am. etc.,' C. H. MASON. Timaru. December 6.
