A housewife might imagine she has dialled the number of her butcher, but the response to her ring will show she has called up instea 1 the residence of a cleric. An example of the consequences of such carelessness was heard by a member of Parliament when strolling through the building. "No, this is not the museum, but the Legislative Council," he heard a messenger retort In answer to a telephone call In that section of the building.

"To-day, gentlemen, we are in a world which changes most rapidly.” said Mr C. H. Chapman, M . at the engineers’ smoke concert in Wellington on Saturday night. “Political experiments are being undertaken In vuriorr. countries; dictatorships are being indulged in. and I venture to say that the British constitution is superior to any of them—(applause) and Hint our reliance upon the democratic vote with an intelligent, democracy will steer us clear of the troubles with which other nations are confronted. The engineers from the very nature of their occupation are thinkers as well as workers. The world to-day is in need of those who by their training, can think clearly and logically, and no class of the community Is better fitted for clear and logical thinking than the engineers.” Souter’s Xmas Fair ot Footwear jomences to-day.
