The hull of the Union Company's old <*argo steamer Kahika has found its final resting place. The shell, which had been lying at the shore end of the export wharf. Dunedin, for several days, was towed to the spit by the tug Dunedin. An explosive charge was placed in the hull of the Kahika and when this was fired she quickly filled and sank alongside the mole. The Kahika is about the last ot the Union Company's old type of cargo carriers to disappear, all the metal from which is being carried to Japan by the steamer Nankwa Naru. The work of preparing the mortgagors’ relief consolidation measure is being pushed on by the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, who intends that the Bill shall pass this session. The present legislation expires on December 31. and the experience of commissions having disclosed a number of anomalies departmental experts have been devising a new measure which, in addition to removing these, will provide for complete consolidation of the various enactments As the principles contained in the original nensure were completely new to New Zealand it was expected that difficulties would arise, but it is the intention of the Minister ! that the experience gained during the last two years shall not be loot and ' that the new BUI will establish machinery calculated to ensure that ! Justice is done and the administration run smoothly On the ground that decisions during tin* past six months have shown a substantial degree of uniformity the Government's intention i not to ppolnt a special Judge for this 1 da. of work has been reinforced.
