SOCIAL NOTES

Miss Ann Ensor, North Canterbury, will leave this week for South America. Miss Marion Hay, Geraldine, Is spending a few days in Christchurch. Miss Ethel Rogers, Dunedin, is staying with Miss Theo Williams, Geraldine. Mrs A. C. Wigley, Opuha Lodge, Park Lane, has returned from Four Peaks. Miss Joan Beattie, Bluecliffs, is spending a short holiday with Miss Hampton, Timaru. Miss Williams, Geraldine, is staying with Misses Woollcombe, Trafalgar Street. Mr and Mrs S. F. Smithson, Orbell Street, will leave to-day on a visit to Mrs W. F. Hamilton, "Ashwiek,” Fair lie. Mrs Harman, Christchurch, and Miss Hartley, England, are staying at “The Bungalow,” Wai-iti Road. Miss Mary Gabites has returned from the North Island to spend the holidays with her mother, Mrs G. E. Gabites, Wai-iti Road. Mrs A. S. Elworthy, Holme Station, Pareora, returned yesterday from a visit to her daughter, Mrs Derrick Gould, Christchurch. Madame Alice Gower-Burns, and Mrs Harris, who were guests at “The Bungalow,” Wai-iti Road, have returned to Christchurch. Mrs M. J. Godby, London, who was the guest of Mrs R. H. Rhodes, “Carne,” Sealy Street, has left for Christchurch. Mrs E. J. Mirams, Beverley Road, and Miss Devenish-Meares, Sarah Street, are on a visit to Sumner. Because the police censored the children's bedtime stories, Brazil's five broadcasting stations suspended operations for a day in protest. Mrs Whitehouse and her pupils exhibited a large number of paintings and art gifts in conjunction with the musical recital given in the Little Play House on Monday evening. The standard of work displayed was very high and was much admired by those present. Mrs J. A. Wilson, formerly of the Chatham Islands, has taken a cottage at Four Peaks for a year. The Convent of Ursburg in Bavaria is self-supporting, the nuns doing all the farm work, making shoes, clothes, and books. They also run a school, a saw mill, and a power station. The convent's history goes back some 800 years and the buildings and land cover a very extensive area. A singing contest is conducted annually at the Timaru Girls’ High School for the Ronaldson Cup. This year's competition, which was Judged by Mr A. W. V. Vine, attracted 10 entries, and was won by Dorothy Gibb. The first-aid section of a comprehensive competition for which prizes have been given by Mr T. D. Burnett, attracted an entry of between 60 and 70, and the Judge, Mr W. Smith, experienced a busy afternoon. **************************

A surprise party visited the home of Mr R. Oliphant, in honour of the twenty-first birthday of their daughter Lily. A pleasant evening was spent in games, dancing and singing. Owing to her father being indisposed, the guest of honour was presented with the customary key by Mr T. Macleod, of Christchurch, and also received many gifts. Those present included Mesdames G. Simpson, W. G. Donaldson, A. Purcell, J. Joiner (Hinds), V. Bonham, Misses C. Donaldson, J. Henderson ißiccarton), 80. Oliphant, S. Oliphant, R. Greenwood (Southbridge), Messrs T. Macleod, A. M. Miller, H. Purcell, J. Somerville. V. Bonham, F. Hurdley and H. W. Hickman (Southbridge). Mr and Mrs R. Oliphant, and Miss Lily Oliphant. A meeting of the Timaru Women’s Unemployment Committee was held on Monday, when the following members were present—Mesdames C. A. Paterson (in the chair), T. W. Satterthwaite, R. H. Rhodes, T. E. Holdgate, F. G. M. Raymond, B. Gillies, F. E. Duncan, L. J. O'Connell, Misses Adams, Lindsay, Lovell-Smith, Neill, and Mills (hon. secretary). Apologies were received from Mrs Burns, Miss Barr and Adjutant Radcliffe. The secretary reported that conditions were very much better and only 11 girls were now on the workroom roll of whom four had prospects of work, and four were in subsidised positions. It was decided—(l) To maintain those girls in their positions until after Christmas at least; (2) To close the workroom to-morrow; (3) To advertise the re-opening of the register of unemployed early in the new year.

The story of Welsh love spoons is told by Professor G. H. Green. They are considered to be so Interesting that Aberstwyth has a museum collection of them, states an exchange. Until recently young men used to carve wooden spoons for the girls of their choice. The decoration became so elaborate that many of them are not spoons at all, but panels, carved all over with wonderful figures, a tiny hole being made pust to recall the fact that it began as a spoon. Many of these spoons are preserved and are handed down in Welsh families. They are all carved with a pocket-knife.
