It sold readily at an average of 4ld to 43d. about *d under Argentine prices. IMPORTS OF MEAT QUESTION IN HOUSE OF COMMONS United Pres* Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, December 4. In the House of Commons. Mr George Lambert (Liberal) asked: Will Mr W. E. Elliot (Minister of Agriculture) notify Australia and New Zealand that the existing free entry of meat will cease after June 30 unless the price of British meat shows reasonable profit to the producer? Mr Elliot replied that the method of importation of meat after June 30 will receive consideration in consultation with the Dominions. IS THERE A MARKET IN BRITAIN? OUTSPOKEN PRESS COMMENTS. United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright (Received December 5, 7.0 pjn.) LONDON. December 5. Eulogising the Maloja’s chilled shipment as the most successful ever made. “The Daily Standard" in a leader expresses the opinion that the experiment opens up prospects of depending entirely on the Dominions for meat not produced in Britain. The paper deplores that while the experiment is progressing, Mr W. Runciman (President of the Board of Trade) has made a black pact with the Argentine, depriving Britain for three years of the power of encouraging the development of the Empire’s resources. Obviously while the pact is operating, there is no room for Australian chilled meat. Meanwhile the Argentina concessions to Britain are Illusory. “The Daily Mail” In a leader says: “The system has not fulfilled the Government's intention to raise cattle prices, and enable farmers not to work at a loss. Prices are still as low as last year.”
