In the House of Representatives yesterday. Mr P. C Webb, the newlyelected member for Buller, was formally sworn in, Messrs E. J. Howard and R. Semple acting as his sponsor*. Mr J. 8. Neill. British Consul at Nukualofa, accompanied by Mrs Neill, arrived at Auckland by the Waikawa on Saturday, and will leave later for England on furlough. Constable J. Morris, of Gisborne, has received three months' leave of absence. He has been in the New Zealand Police Force for 35 years, and retires on February 7. Earl Jellicoe. who commanded the Grand Fleet in the North Sea at the outbreak of the Great War. and afterwards became Governor-General of New Zealand, was 74 yesterday, having been born on December 5, 1859. The Timaru Presbytery at yesterday’* meeting decided to congratulate tit* Rev John Mackenzie on his appointment as mod era tor-elect of tire Victorian Assembly. It was stated that Mr Mackenzie had left the Timaru Presbytery for Australia. Colonel N W B B Thomas. D.S.O* late of the New Zealand Staff Corp*. has completed hi* engagement .is Commandant of the Shanghai Volunteer Corps, and leaves Shanghai on December 17 to live In Kent.
