HEAVY TRAFFIC FEES

FIRE BOARDS LIABLE. By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, December 5. A reserved judgment was given by the Chief Justice the Rt. Hon. Sir Michael Myers, in the Supreme Court this afternoon in a case heard last week raising the question whether or not fire engines owned and operated by the Wellington Fire Board come within the definition of heavy motor vehicles in the Heavy Motor Vehicles Regulations, 1932, and whether the Fire Board is liable to the Wellington City

Corporation for heavy traffic license fees in respect of them. His Honour said that he had considered the question in so far only as a vehicle carrying a fire escape ladder and fire pump vehicles were concerned, and declared that they must be heavy motor vehicles v.ithin the meaning of

the regulations. His Honour said that if it should be thought that vehicles used entirely for such a public purl>ose as fire suppression should be exempt from the heavy motor vehicle regulations, it was presumably a simple enough matter for the authorities to provide for exemption by an appropri-

ate amendment.
