A New Zealand Airways aeroplane piloted by Mr E. Clarke, with Mr H. M. Mackay as passenger, left Timaru on Monday afternoon for New Plymouth, to greet Mr C. T. P. Ulm and party after their Tasman flight. The trip from Timaru to New Plymouth occupied seven hours.
Among the amendments made by the Lands Committee to the Harbours Amendment Bill is the omission of the clause placing restrictions on the discharge of rubbish or ballast into harbours. Considerable exception was taken to this clause by the representatives of local authorities. Another amendment deals with the investments of Harbour Boards, while others are of a machinery nature.
An appeal to radio listeners at a mass meeting held in the Auckland Town Hall on Sunday night to write to the Prime Minister on behalf of the “friendly road” services brought such a general response that Mr Forbes had 760 letters on the subject added to his usual correspondence yesterday. The writers state that they belong to the “friendly road” group and are most anxious that arrangements should be made for continuing these religious services that meant so much to them. Mr Forbes’s only comment on the subject was t that so far he had not had an opportunity to see the letters.
Provision for the appointment of a principal of Victoria University College is made in a Bill introduced in the House of Representatives yesterday. The appointment is to be made by the College Council from the members of the Professorial Board, and during the intervals, between meetings of the Professorial Board the principal is to exercise powers of the Board subject ro the control of the Council and to the right of appeal to the Board. He is also by virtue of his office to be a member of the Council and chairman of the Professorial Board.
