NATIONAL INDIGNATION IN U.S.A. DANGEROUS BLOW TO CONSTITUTION. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright NEW YORK, November 29. Feeling over the lynchtngs continued unabated to-day and, in fact, increased as a result of the Missouri affair, In which it is now revealed the negro was literally burned alive and not hanged, while madly laughing women shouted encouragement to the lynchers. The Sheriff explained he turned the prisoner over to the mob for fear the 10 other negroes and 60 white men In the gaol might also be subjected to mob hysteria, and innocent prisoners might be killed. Governor G. B. Park, of Missouri, announced he would be thorough in his investigations. “There is no justification for the affair. Lynching is a dangerous blow to our constitution, law and civilisation. I want the mob leaders prosecuted.” Habeas Corpus proceedings resulted in the return of the four prisoners to the Maryland lynching scene, where the people started a boycott against Baltimore goods as a protest against Governor A. C. Ritchie’s action. The latter, in an informal statement to-day,
declared: “It is my plain duty as Governor of Maryland, to see that the law is supreme and it was only when local officials failed to perform their duties that I acted.” X. Kansas White, the prisoner who yesterday killed a negro gaoler in an attempt to escape, had been spirited away from the county gaol and taken from State penitentiary to State penitentiary, in order to save him from the threats of the mob.
