HIGH SPEED TRAVEL

RAPID GROWTH OF TRAFFIC If proof were wanting that there is a wide demand for high speed passenger transport between Perth and Adelaide, it has been afforded during September. The East-West mail aeroplanes have had their passenger accommodation fully booked every trip, and in addition numbers of people have been turned away, not occasionally, but continuously, for a number of weeks in succession. Passenger traffic figures give adequate proof that air travel is popular, since the airway has been the only form of inter-state communication which has been fully booked, and in successive weeks, not several, but scores of applicants for seats have had to be turned away. Recent experience has proved that there exists a definite need for an express service to cater for traffic which surface communications cannot handle. This proof is the fact that the majority of the people who could not be carried by air have not made the trip at all. In addition to this demand for a fast service between the two States, there has been for some time past a steadily increasing stream of applicants for seats by people arriving from overseas by mail steamer. In the experience of West Australian Airways Limited this indicates a return to normal business conditions in Australia, as the rapid travel is used as a means of economising travelling time across the Continent. The achievement of such a condition in its traffic is a performance of which the company is Justifiably proud, since it can be attributed entirely to the satisfactory working oi every unit of its organisation for well over a decade.
