BULLER SEAT

TWO CANDIDATES. By Telegraph—Press Association WESTPORT, November 8. Messrs P. C. Webb (Labour) and Horace lan Simson (Independent) will contest the Buller seat, made vacant by the death of the late Leader of the Opposition, Mr H. E. Holland. When the nominations closed at noon to-day no Coalition candidate had been announced. This is the first time that the Coalition has allowed a by-election to go by default. Rumours that the miners were divided in their allegiance to the official Labour candidate have not borne fruit in any active opposition. The United Miners’ Council called special meetings of the miners’ branches in the Buller constituency to consider the*, position. Finally it was decided to give support to the official nominee, Mr P. C. Webb.
