M OMEN’S INSTITUTES
PLEASANT POINT. At a meeting of the Pleasant Point Women's Institute, Mrs .Cartwright presided and reported on the federation meeting held in Timaru. Correspondence was received regarding a proposal to re-establish the Pleasant Point library. Members enthusiastically decided to support the venture. It was arranged that the next meeting take the form of a picnic at the Domain, to which members of surrounding institutes will be invited. An egg drive in aid of the Central Relief Society resulted in a good supply being forwarded to Timaru. A demonstation of raffia work was given by Miss Bourne who was accorded a vote of thanks. Group demonstrations were given by Mrs Herbert (knitting), Mrs Cunningham (smocking), Mrs Taylor (gloves) and Miss Wooffindin (moccasins). Afternoon tea was dispensed by Mesdames McNeur. McPherson, McDonald, Henderson, Muir, Misses Munro (2), Maze and McPherson and McCort. ROSEWILL. At the monthly meeting of the Rosewill Women's Institute, Mrs Brosnahan presided over a fair attendance )f members. A committee was elected to take charge of the children's Christmas party. Three practical demonstrations were given by Miss Wooffindin of the curing and dyeing of skins. Mrs Cartwright of the covering of an old umbrella and Mrs Taylor of the making of wreaths. The visitors acted as judges for the competitions, the results were:—Stencilled article, Miss K. Brosnahan 1, Miss E. Brosnahan 2, Mrs H. Gill 3. Lettuce, Mrs Chapman 1, Miss O'Keeffe 2, Miss Smith 3. Six gooseberries, Mrs Alexander 1, Miss O’Keeffe 2, Mrs Moore 3. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses —Mrs Moore, Misses O’Keeffe, L. and M. Moore. CLAREMONT. At the first monthly meeting of the Claremont Women's Institute, Mrs G. Selbie presided over a good attendance. Seven new members were enrolled. The roll call was “My favourite flower,” and the motto for the month, “The time to be happy is now, the place to be happy is here, the way to be happy is to make others happy.” A bring and buy table in charge of Mrs F. Black proved very successful. Mrs C. McFedran gave a demonstration of the making of wool rag mats and was accorded a vote of thanks. The competitions resulted as follows: —Shortbread, Miss L. Armstrong 1, Mrs Kerr 2, Mrs Greig 3. Frock ”o the value of 7/6, Miss L, Armstrong 1, Miss L. Selbie 2, Mrs W. J. White 3. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses.
