WAIMATE

WINTER SHOW ANNUAL MEETING OF SOCIETY The annual meeting of the Waimate Winter Show and Poultry Society was held on Thursday night, Mr E. C. d’Auvergne presiding over an attendance of 15 members. The annual report stated that the last year must be considered successful, taking into consideration the hard times every show was experiencing. It was suggested that a canvass be made for annual members, who were always an asset to the Association. The outstanding success of the show last year must be attributed to the change of hall, and thanks was due to the secretary for securing such a convenient place. The year had been commenced with a credit of £3/6/9, and closed with a credit of £2l/18/4. The winner of the first prize in the art union, it was pleasing to record, had been a Waimate resident. Mr d’Auvergne thanked all who had assisted with the. last show and said that the result must have been very gratifying to members. Mr Coventry mentioned that _tne credit balance would have been a, little larger but for the dance, which had been run at a loss. The report and balance sheet were adopted. , The election of officers resulted: — President, Mr J. H. Betten; vice-presi-dents, Messrs W. C. Creba, J. Hutt, H. Allington, J. Johns and J. M. Bruce; secretary, Mr L. V. Bren ton; treasurer. Mr C. Coventry; auditor, Mr W. G. Paul; general committee, Messrs T. Wilce, E. C. d’Auvergne, F. Creba, J. Carbis, A. Deadmarsh, W. F. George and H. Bishop, with power to add; superintendent of show, Mr Wilce; finance committee, Messrs T. Wilce, C. Coventry, H. Allington and J. Betten. Mr Coventry referred to the commission received on the sale of fruit after the show, and stated that the Association received only 10/8 out of a total sale of approximately £6 worth, whereas they had all the trouble of collecting the money and paying out. Mr H. Allington said the system had been in vogue for years and no complaints had been made. A member: We have just wakened up. It was suggested that growers place a reserve on their fruit and what was obtained over and above should go to the Association. Mr Creba said the same percentage was made as on the sale of poultry. Mr Allington said that a change cf system might discourage growers from showing, and Mr Creba said that they should get the growers together and thresh the matter out. Mr Wilce suggested making a charge of 2/- a case for selling. Mr Coventry said he would be satisfied with 1/- a case. The prices received at last show had gone unusually high, and the bidders had “gone mad.” Mr Hutt: They were mad when they found the money was not going to the Mr Wilce moved that a fixed charge of 1/- a case be made for selling, and the motion was carried without dissent. The matter of obtaining canary cages was left to Messrs Allington and F. Creba. Mr George said a good deal of dissatisfaction had been shown in regard to prize money and entry fees, and he suggested that the committee should revise the schedule. At present when an exhibitor entered and was awarded first prize, if there were not sufficient entries he received nothing, which did not seem fair. It was decided that prize money and entry fees be revised. Remits for the annual meeting cf the South Island Association were left in the hands of the president and Messrs Wilce and F. Creba. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr W. G. Paul as auditor, and to Mr Barford for the use of the rooms for meetings.

He congratulated Mr Brown on his promotion and trusted he would have a pleasant stay in Marton. in returning thanks Mr Robinson said that he left Waimate reluctantly. The gift would serve as a remembrance of his pleasant associations with

the members of the club with whom he had got on well. Mr Brown said that he shared with the rest of the Club their sorrow in losing “Robbie” for he had been a jolly good sport.
