“TRIVIAL AFFAIR”
DEMONSTRATION BY SAILORS “THE RED FLAG" SUNG By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, October 24. Trouble occurred with some of the crew of the Diomede at Lyttelton on Monday afternoon, and a demonstration was made, "The Red Flag" being sung. The demonstrators were all New Zealand ratings in the ship. Their alleged grievances which are said to have been the cause, were the recent general tightening up of conditions generally, and the curtailment of extra leave which the crew was expecting on Labour Day. The men due for leave expected to get away from the ship at 1 o’clock, and when no parade for liberty men was called they commenced a mild demonstration. No significance is attached to the singing of “The Red Flag.” which was merely an expression of disapproval over the loss of leave. The men were eventually given leave at 3 p.m. The personnel of the Diomede is composed of mixed Imperial and New Zealand ratings, and the demonstrators were all New Zealand men. Today the New Zealand ratings were paraded before Captain Cosmo Graham, who addressed them, explaining why leave had been reduced. To a reporter to-night the captain said the affair was very trivial, and hundreds of visitors were admitted to the ship immediately afterwards.
