GERALDINE

THE BISHOP’S VISIT SERMON AT ST. MARY’S | CHURCH The Right Rev. Bishop West-Watson preached at Peel Forest on Sunday morning, and at St. Mary's at Evensong. In opening his address at Geraldine, his Lordship referred to the proceedings of Synod, which had just completed its deliberations at Christchurch. He stated that it was the intention of the Synod to ask Parliament to pass a Bill by which all parishes would pool the returns from their investments, so that those parishes which were- well-endowed would be able to help those not so • fortunate. He praised the efforts of the Church Army, which he said was doing magnificent work.” Preaching from verse 27. 14th chap - ter of the Gospel of St. John, Bishop West-Watson said that in spite of the high aims of such organisations as the League of Nations, the world had seen ] nothing but disappointed hopes and thwarted desires. They who remembered the years which followed 1914 had no desire for a repetition of that catastrophe, but there was growing up a new generation which had not known the war and the suffering which it caused. It. was for the older ones who had learnt the lessons taught by the war to lead men's thoughts into something better and more noble. There should be no desire stronger than that of peace, and the desire for a quiet life. We should aim to develop the moral muscles, for man was made to toll and to vanquish. Those who had suffered most had contributed most to th 3 progress of the world. To avoid trouble we must have what is the moral equivalent for war. something to strain for. We should not be prepared to take our ease, but should always be prepared to help others, even if the people in need lived in other countries. There was always a war on for the Christian, and he could help others in scores of ways. “Remember,” said Bishop WestWatson, “all those things which require effort are worth striving for.” He exhorted the congregation to remember the words of the text. “Not as the world giveth, I give unto you!” CATHOLIC MISSION CONCLUDED. There were large congregations at the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Sunder, when the week's mission conducted by the Rev. Father P. Kane, S.M., was cohcluded. ,Two Masses were celebrated.
