SOUTH CANTERBURY * CLUB ANNUAL REPORT The report of the president to be presented at the annual meeting of the South Canterbury Athletic Club la as under:— In presenting the annual report I am bound to refer with regret to the state of the club which resulted in the decision to curtail the season. Realising that the entries for the evening meetings were diminishing and that the athletes available would not warrant the holding of a championship meeting, the committee with regret decided to abandon all meetings after March. It is realised tnat during the strenuous times through which we have, unfortunately, been passing a number of our athletes have taken work in the country and have not been available for the evening meetings. In spite of the curtailed season the evening meetings were very efficiently run, thanks to a large body of keen supporters of the club. Most of the meetings were held at the Rectory grounds and our thanks are due to Mr W. Thomas for the use of the grounds. Mr A. Jackson proved invaluable in preparing the grounds for the meetings. The Wallace Cup for meet points gained throughout the season, was keenly competed for and won by V. McKeague, a new runner of great promise. The Mcßae Cup tor most buttons won for the season went to H. J. Eaton. The Aitken Banner for Inter-branch relays was won by the Timaru Boys’ High School. During the season an attempt was made to form a branch at St. Andrews, but unfortunately, it did not function. A number of the club members and officials attended an evening meeting at Waimate and were very hospitably received. The club desires to place on record its appreciation of the continued and kindly Interest of Mr C. R. Orr-Walker in our aims and activities. His zeal and his presence at our meetings are an example which younger members might well emulate to the ultimate benefit of athletics. During the season H. J. Eaton was an outstanding performer. On the Caledonian Grounds at New Year, he recorded exceptionally fast time for the mile. He also competed at the Canterbury championships coming third in the mile. For this performance he was picked to represent Canterbury at the New Zealand championships. Unfortunately he wa3 unable to attend this meeting. The committee wishes to take this opportunity to express its thanks to the local Press for the excellent reports of meetings, and the interest shown in the progress of amateur athletics in South Canterbury.
