SPORTS GATHERING EFFORT TO AUGMENT SCHOOL FUNDS A sports meeting organised by the Waimate School Committee in aid of the school funds was held at Victoria Park yesterday afternoon, the programme including several amateur events in addition to those for the children. The monthly meeting of the Waimate branch of the W.C.T.U. was presided over by Mrs Roy, who made reference to the splendid victory of Mrs McCombs at the recent by-election at Lyttelton. A resolution was passed by the Union requesting the secretary to write to the Minister of Internal Affairs expressing pleasure at the Bill to be brought before Parliament giving New Zealand women who are British subjects, the right to retain their British nationality, on marrying an alien. Mrs Palmer, the Union’s delegate, gv- a report on the recent Convention, after which Miss Havman gave an address on the gambling evil. A recitation was given by Mrs Buckingham.
