FIRST-GRADE MATCH OLD BOYS BEAT SCHOOL Although the cricket season in South Canterbury does not officially open until Saturday next, the matches In which High School teams were drawn to play were decided on Saturday, on account of the School’s annual athletic sports being set down for next week. The first grade match. School v. Old Boys, was played at the Rectory, and resulted in a win for Old Boys on the first innings. It was the first of the one-day matches, and considering the state of the wicket, which was soft as a result of overnight rain, the batsmen did well to score 283 runs in the afternoon. The other two first grade games will be played next Saturday. The Play. Burnett and Souter opened for School. Thomson and Carr taking up the attack. Souter notched a single off the fifth ball of the over, but was taken in the slips by Leslie off the first ball Carr sent down. Ritchie hit a boundary and a single off the next two balls, but the last ball of the over completely beat him. Two wickets were thus down for seven runs. Carr having taken both. When Gabites joined Burnett, the rot was stopped, and the pair batted confidently in spite of changes in the bowling. Neither batsman set out to force the pace, the state of the wicket making them exercise care. With the total at 52. Gabites who had made 23, was out to a fine running catch *by Morison. 52—3—23. Fearn came next, but did not remain long, being bowled by Morison with the fifth ball of his second over. Sara also made five, being caught by Carr off Leslie. Unwin was then given a turn with the ball, and with the last ball of his first over, he got Mulligan l.b.w. Harte and Burnett made a good stand for the seventh wicket, putting on 21 runs. At this stage Burnett, who had played a good Innings, was caught by McDonald off Marriott. His total of 36 Included two fours. The remaining batsmen offered little resistance. and the side were out for 113. Marriott, four for 21. was the most successful bowler. Old Boys at the Wickets. Unwin and Rollinson were Old Boys' opening pair, but they did little better than School, the first wicket falling for four runs. Rollinson being bowled by Ritchie after notching a single. Marriott and Unwin shaped much more confidently, hitting up 29 in a short time. G. Lawson and A. Lawson also went for the bowling, the former scoring 38 before being dismissed by Ritchie, and the latter 18. Thomson also was In a scoring mood, being unbeaten with 30 to his credit.
