Saturday's long road cycle race from Palmerston North to Wellington was won by W. Glennie (Blenheim) off the 36min. mark. Glennie and his comarkers W. Baillie (Wellington) and A. Mulholland (Wellington) entered the Basin Reserve together. Baillie's tyre collapsed as he passed through the gate, and he was left to complete the race on foot while the other two sprinted home. The contest for fastest time resolved itself into a duel between L. Dwight, (Auckland) and F. Grose (Christchurch). Both scratch men entered the Basin Reserve together and Dwight won by 3-ssec. Grose fell near Hinmtangi and lost- half a minute. The riders encountered moderate head winds all the way, but otherwise, when once away from Palmerston North where intermittent light rain was falling, conditions were good. A further development in the controversy as to the national control of cycling occurred after the race, when a meeting of a large number of cyclists and officials was held. Mr H. D. Loudon, secretary of the Cycling Federation, said that officials of the Federation and League of Amateur Wheelmen had come from Christchurch to Wellington with the idea of settling the matter once and for all. He claimed that the Federation had supreme control and said it had been advised by the world body of its power to suspend the New Zealand Cycling Council and affiliate with the League of Wheelmen. Mr J. Sturroch. chairman of the executive of the League, said that the whole of the South Island was behind it. He hoped to form a provincial centre in Wellington. A further meeting will be held tomorrow.
