After heavy rain during the night and early morning, the weather was ideal, and the track in first class order, but on the slow side. The weather was fine for the V.A.T.C. meeting and the attendance large, including many New Zealanders. Shakuni had a sterling win in the Hurwood Handicap. He is trained by George Price and was ridden by the New Zealander, M. McCarten. He is engaged in the Victoria Derby. Adored, a half-sister to Amounts, led all the way in the Mona Nursery and beat the New Zealand bred Queen Helen, who finished fast. Sunclad was prominent always, and won the Gwyn Nursery brilliantly. Angelo ran a good race, and the New Zealand owned Cavalcade finished fast. Sunclad has had two wins and a second in three starts. J. Pike rode a masterly race on the winner. Gaine Carrington was fifth early in the Caulfield Cup, but led into the straight and had a brilliant win. He cost his owner, a bookmaker named James Phillips, approximately 2000 guineas last season. The rider, J. Pike, had his first mount in the race in 1907, when he was third on Welcome Trist. He won on Whittier in 1925. The trainer, Cecil Godby, scored with Purser in 1924. Jimmie Boy ran a surprising race and Oro finished with a great run. Kuvera was never dangerous. Kenjin was prominent always and won the steeplechase after a good race with Royal Banquet. George William, which was third, won the race two years ago. Closing Time led for the last five furlongs in the Windsor Handicap. He is owned and trained by the former New Zealander J. T. Jamieson, and was ridden by E. Bartle. Melason led all the way in the second division and beat the fast finishing 1.-DVie Star. The latter is trained by the New Zelander A. D. Webster. Poison has reported that Winooka’s hoof was in good condition to-day. and that the horse will be in excellent condition for Wednesday's race, barring accidents. He is still worried over the condition of the track as further rain is predicted, and the track dries slowly. Poison announced that he had cabled the owners of Winooka asking permission to keep the horse in America for appearance at Hilesh Park. Miami, during the winter, probably late in February. V. Whitney had agreed this morning to the terms for the Equipoise-Winoo-ka match race at Belmont on November 7. The race will be over seven furlongs at level weights, 9.0 each, the winner to take all the stake. The total of the purse has not been disclosed. The match is contingent on Winooka beating his opponents in the Laurel challenge race on October 25. Winooka may remain in the United States and race at Haileh Park, Miami.
