WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

HILTON. At the October meeting of the Hilton Women's Institute, Mrs H. H. Brosnahan presided over a large attendance of members and friends. Before proceeding with the meeting, Mrs Brosnalian made reference to bereavements suffered by Mrs L. Beattie, Mr and Mrs Friend and family, and Mr Daly S. Davies (Timaru). Gratification was expressed at the presence of Mrs C. Brenton, who through indisposition had been absent from several meetings. Mrs Brenton suitably acknowledged the kindly sentiments.

In view of the very sound financial position of . the Institute, it was unanimously decided to vote £1 to the Geraldine R.S.A. appeal to raise sufficient funds with which to purchase an artificial limb for Mr Armstrong. Mrs A. Twomey and Miss Scott were elected delegates to attend the Federation meeting to be held in Timaru. Thanks were extended to Mrs H. H. Brosnahan for providing the seed for the potato-growing competition. The president intimated that a stall had been arranged for at the folk dancing festival, and stall-holders were appointed to take charge. Dental Nurse Clarkson (Geraldine) gave an address on “The Teeth and Their Care."

Afternoon tea was dispensed by Mesdames Brosnahan, Bruce, Parish and Baynes. Miss Slater gave a pianoforte solo.

The sales table, under the supervision of Mrs Brenton, did brisk business, while a crate of goods from the New Zealand Institute for the Blind, Auckland, in charge of Miss Pierce, proved of great interest and a good sale was reported. The dressmaking competition, when competitors were obliged to display their goods in a mannequin parade to music supplied by Mrs Brosnahan, proved most interesting. Mrs Bate (Rangitira Valley) made the following awards:—Sleeveless (four entries): Mrs Green 1, Mrs Winmill 2. Short sleeves (three entries): Mrs Parish 1, Mrs A. Twomey 2. Long sleeves (three entries) : Mrs T. Bruce 1, Mrs T. Beavan 2. The competition for best home-made nut loaf resulted:—Mrs A. Twomey 1, Miss Taylor 2.
