Rear-Admiral Byrd sailed for the Antarctic aboard the Jacob Ruppert to-day. The Bear, which is remaining in the shipyard to be caulked, is scheduled to sail next week to join the expedition in Dunedin. A crowd of well-wishers, and the last minute bustle of leading supplies, made the departure a colourful one. Rear-Admiral Byrd, who has practically recovered from his throat ailment, met the newspaper men and explained that the expedition was not primarily to fly over the South Pole, which had already been done, but to secure further data about the unexplored region. He said that a polar flight would probably be made, however.
