SALES TAX
MOVE FOR ABOLITION NO SUPPORT BY AUCKLAND The Council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce has refused to endorse the recommendation of the executive of the Associated Chambers that the sales tax should be lifted. The chamber was considering remits from various chambers, as well as from the 'uekland Chamber, which are to be considered at the conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce. to be begun in Wanganui on October 26. Mr J. Hislop said that so far from the Auckland body supporting the remit, he would like to see the tax increased. It was equitable and fair. Mr S. Takle: It is futile to say that the sales tax can come off at present. "It has formed an equitable tax in lieu of income tax or Customs tax," said Mr Gainor Jackson, ‘ until such time as duties are reduced. 1 think * that we would be foolish to ask that this tax come off."
The chairman (Mr H. Turner): The opinion among business men is that it was the last tax to go on, and should be the first to come off.
