TIMARU’S HOLIDAY ATTRACTIONS

To the Editor ot " The Timaru Herald ” Sir—With the approach of the holiday season, when preparations are in train for the extension of facilities for visitors and tourists, I wish to bring forward a proposal which appears to me to merit serious consideration. I have heard the criticism from southern visitors that there are very few good walks round about Timaru. It is certainly pleasant to spend a few in the morning or afternoon in a quiet pedestrian excursion to some place of interest, where one can be sure of healthy sunshine, fresh air, and an interesting view. Now, at various times I have greatly enjoyed a Sunday morning walk across the Bay, past the wharves and out to the end of the breakwater. But as the breakwater consists of large rocks and formidable spaces between the sleepers, it is only accessible to fairly active people. My proposal is that the surface should be levelled off with gravel and clay to make a good pedestrian track as far out as is practicable. I cannot see that this would interfere with its usefulness as a breakwater, or really entail much expense apart from labour. And surely labour could be obtained for a project of this nature from the unemployment schemes. It would also be necessary to form a track from the wharf to the near end of the extension. I am sure that this walk would be a source of great pleasure to all who enjoy the open air, the wonderful view of the Alps, the fresh, uncontaminated sea breezes, the gently lapping, calm, blue-sparkling Timaru sea. or, in rougher weather, the majestic fury of the foam-crested Pacific breakers, and the healthy glow that comes from a Jolly good walk in a good, strong, clean wind. Some of your readers will knot/ what I mean. Such a walk would be a unique and useful possession for the town. I trust I am not the only person In Timaru to whom the project appeals.—l am, etc., NORDIC. Wellington, October 15.
