COUNTERFEITING CHARGE

ACCUSED REFUSED BAIL. By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN, October 16. In the Magistrate’s Court this afternoon, Robert Stanley McCausland appeared on two charges, that on August 8 and September 17, he made counterfeit coins with intent to make them pass for current silver coin. Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., was on the bench. James Harold Mitchell, acting manager of Woolworth’s, Ltd., said that between August 10 and September 20, the sum of £l/9/6 in counterfeit coins was accepted as genuine. The sum included three half-crowns and ten florins. These coins were later handed to Detective-Sergeant Doyle and Detective Gibson. Detective Doyle described a search made by himself and Detective Gibson of accused’s house at Kew. They found a primus lamp, a tool box, strips of lead and other metal. Near the lamp was a newspaper with a white powder scattered over it. Accused said that the outfit was used for soldering. In a cigarette tin 12 counterfeit florins were found. Accused remarked: "It is a straight catch. Good luck to you. You have found what you were looking for.’ L H. James (Government analyst), said he was certain that the coins collected by Woolworths were identical with the coins taken from the accused’s with the coins taken from the accused home. Accused, who pleaded not guilty, was committed to the Supreme Court for trial, ball being refused.
