A POPULAR OFFICER

MR G. CLARK PROMOTED DEPARTURE FROM TIMARU REGRETTED Before his departure from Timaru to take up an appointment as Relieving Officer, General Post Office, Mr G. Clark, Chief Postmaster, was met by one of the largest gatherings cf officers held in Timaru and presented with an angler's outfit—reel, line and landing net. In making the presentation, Mr N. D. Mangos, accountant, expressed the sincere regret of the staff that the time had arrived for Mr Clark to move on. During his all too short stay in Timaru, Mr Clark had spared no effort to improve the social welfare of the office, and it was largely to his credit that such an excellent club as was at present in existence, had been formed and was flourishing. Mr Clark was the possessor of that rare attribute of being an excellent disciplinarian and at the same time a most approachable controlling head. He was leaving the office in first class order, and in every way efficient. Mr Clark was always gentlemanly and considerate for those under his charg.e and this was deeply appreciated by the whole staff. Mr Mangos expressed the opinion that Mr Clark would continue to advance in the service, and wished him the greatest measure of success in the future. Messrs R. S. Wheeler (supervisor of Telegraph Department), E. E. Wallace (supervisor Clerical Department), F. A. Hopkins (supervisor of Postal Department), and R. S. St. John (supervisor of Telegraph Engineer’s office), also spoke on behalf of their respective branches. In reply, Mr Clark expressed his thanks to the controlling officers and staffs for their assistance during his term of office in Timaru. The Timaru Post Office staff had an excellent reputation with the business people of the town, and he enjoined all officers to see that that reputation was upheld. He sincerely regretted leaving Timaru, where he had made so many good friends, and he would always look back on the period of his stay here as one of the happiest of his official career. He thanked the officers for their handsome gifts, which he hoped at a later date to use to good effect on some of the South Canterbury rivers. Mr Clark leaves today, to relieve the chief postmaster, Dunedin. jpportunity was taken at a meeting of the Social Club to bid farewell to Mr Clark. Mr R. S. Wheeler, president of the Social Club, and Mr R. A. Heron, chairman of the oemmittee, expressed the general regret of the members that Mr Clark was leaving the Timaru office. In reply, Mr Clark expressed pleasure at the opportunity thus afforded him of saying au revoir to such a large gathering of officers. The Social Club had become a very valuable asset to the office, both from the point of view of the officers themselves and of the Department, and he trusted that it would continue to function in the excellent manner it had done during the initial year of its existence. He assured members that it would be his endeavour to drop in on Timaru whenever possible, even if it were only to teach some of the “top-notchers” on the ping-pong ladder how the game really should be played.
