GERALDINE

PROVINCIAL BANDS’ CONTEST LOCAL BAND TO COMPETE Subject to the consent of the Management Committee, the Geraldine District Band will compete in the Canterbury Provincial Bands’ Association's annual contest, which will be held at Leeston next month. At last year's contest, which was held at Ashburton, the Geraldine Band was only three points below the winning band in the test selection, but lost points in the quickstep. Geraldine secured second place in the test selection, and third in the aggregate. The conductor of the Band (Mr E. Undrill) stated yesterday that the bandsmen were practising hard, and had made much improvement in their drill under Mr J. S. Lorimer, who was acting as drum major. Mr w. Tucker, the drum major of the Ashburton Silver Band, who had achieved repeated successes with his Band, had assisted the local Band with their drill at a recent practice, and had promised further assistance. The Band were much indebted to Mr Tucker for his help. Mr Undrill added that the test selection for next month’s contest was "Happy Memories,” an arrangement by Greenwood. The music for the quickstep was left to the individual choice of the competing bands. A suggestion had been made that next year’s contest should be held in Geraldine, and the supporters of the Band hoped that the suggestion would bear fruit. A visit by the competing bands, both silver and pipe, would stimulate interest. VARIABLE WEATHER. The nor’west conditions which prevailed over Sunday and continued with bright sunshine yesterday morning, underwent a marked change about noon, when the wind veered to the south. A steady drizzle set in later and continued for the greater part of the afternoon. DAFFODIL SHOW. The secretary of the Geraldine Horticultural Society (Mr G. Coombs) has received advice that the curator of the Timaru Gardens (Mr A. W. Anderson), who had been invited to act as the judge of the Society’s forthcoming Daffodil Show is unable to accept the duties. Mr G. E. Knowles (Timaru) has been appointed to judge the daffodil and cut flower classes, and Mrs G. E. Knowles the decorative classes. HOCKEY. Owing to the Geraldine Races the annual Benedicts’ v. Bachelors’ hockey match for the Referees’ Association Oup will now be played on Thursday week. The match could not be played last week owing to the heavy state of the grounds after the recent rains. NOTES. The Boys’ Welfare Committee advertises that there are two good positions available on farms. COUNTY RIFLE SHOOTING. In a friendly match in the Geraldine Town Hall on Thursday evening a team representing the Geraldine County Miniature Rifle Association defeated a team from the Mackenzie County Miniature Rifle Association by 762 to 749. After the shoot, the visitors were entertained at supper. The president of the Geraldine Association (Mr L. Beattie) said that they were glad to welcome the Mackenzie team. The shoot, which had been greatly enjoyed, had been the outcome of a suggestion by the Mackenzie Association, and he hoped it would become an annual fixture. Mr Beattie congratulated Misses Gray and Hunter on securing the top score of 79 in the match. The Deputy-Mayor (Mr J. R. Lack) also took the opportunity to welcome the visitors on behalf of the citizens. Mr F. E. South endorsed the previous speaker’s remarks. The president of the Mackenzie Association (Mr A. R. Seymour) expressed appreciation of the welcome and hospitality extended to the visitors. His remarks were endorsed by the vice-president (Mr J. Guerin). The fallowing were the results:— Geraldine: R.
