SOUTH CANTERBURY UNION MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETS A meeting of the Management Committee of the South Canterbury Rugby Union was held last night. Present:— Messrs J. O'Leary (chairman), A. Aitken, A. B. Herdman, A. G. Knowles, A. H. Clemens, R. Judge, A. B. Rowlands, J. Lillico. Pleasant Point Club made application to have L. Stewart placed on the insurance list.—Referred to the insurance committee. Wailii Club notified that the gate takings for the Temuka-Waihi match on September 2 were £4/13/-, 10 per cent, of which was forwarded. Explanation Accepted. In explanation of their action in playing J. McAuliffe, an unfiled player, Celtic Club wrote stating that the secretary had been instructed to file McAuliffe, but had misunderstood the urgency of the matter. When McAuliffe was later filed the captain was of opinion that when stated as being financial, McAuliffe became automatically entered on the books as a plasdng member by the permit committee. Regret was expressed at the oversight. It was stated that the Club had not played McAuliffe on a previous Saturday because he had not then been filed. —The explanation was accepted. The lease of Fraser Park for the cricket season was again discussed, and it w'as decided to ask the Cricket Association for a definite reply to the Union’s offer by next Monday night. Competition Closed. The fourth grade competition was closed, Temuka being declared winners and Celtic runners-up. Star seniors were declared w'inners of the Beri Cup and Harris Cup. Mr A. B. Rowlands, manager of the South Canterbury team which played Mackenzie Sub-Union, reported that the team had played good football. The Sub-Union had given generous entertainment. Thanks were also due to enthusiasts who had provided cars for the conveyance of the team. It was decided to send letters of thanks to the Sub-Union and also to the car owners. The North Otago Union wrote returning thanks for the very warm hospitality extended to its representative teams and officials in Timaru. A grant of £2 was made to the Pleasant Point Club for travelling expenses in connection with the Beri Cup match. The Beri Cup Match. Temuka Club, in notifying its intention to default in the Beri Cup game last Saturday, wrote stating that the following motion had been passed by the club committee: —“That this ciub consider they have received unfair treatment from the Rugby Union and unless the Beri Cup game be played at Temuka, that we forfeit the game.” Mrs F. Beri wrote declining an invitation to attend the Beri Cup match in Timaru on Saturday and to present the Cup. She considered that, as Te - muka were the runners-up in the Skinner Cup competition and holders of the Beri Cup, the match should have been played at Temuka. She further stated, that the Union had not given the club Its rights and that the match should be played in Temuka twice in 10 years was not too much to ask. The chairman said that as notification had been given in due time, the default was in order. The notification of default was received. Mr Aitken suggested that a copy of the rules governing the Beri Cup match be forwarded to the Temuka Club, as it seemed that the club was under the impression that the game should be played On the ground of the holders of the cup. Mr Lillico: That is not what is biting Temuka. The point is playing the game against Point in here the previous Saturday. Mr O’Leary: I don’t think there is any point in it. We have had enough of it. Members considered that as the rules had already been published, there was no need to forward a copy to the club, and also that the least said about the matter the better. It was decided to ask the Temuka Club to return the Beri Cup. The ltanflfrlv Shield Match. The secretary reported that the Railway Department had arranged for a special train to Christchurch on Saturday for the convenience of Timaru people wishing to attend the Ranfurly Shield match.—A motion of thanks was passed to the Railway Department. Arrangements were made for the Ranfurly Shield game at Christchurch on Saturday. Mr Clemens was appointed manager, and it was decided that the selector and coach should travel with the team. It was arranged that the team should travel by bus, leaving Timaru at 5 p.m. on Friday. The chairman reported that the representative team had practised at Fraser Park during the week-end. All players had been present except -3. Giddings (Fairlie) and J. Callanan, and all seemed particularly keen. A good practice had been held followed by a blackboard lecture by the coach. Another practice had been arranged for to-night and the chairman considered that t*he expense of transport was -warranted. It was reported that owing to an injured leg, J. Callanan might not be available for the match on Saturday. FONG REPLACES HAZELHURST By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 18. R. Hazelhurst has been replaced in the South Island team by A. Fong (West Coast).
