GERALDINE
TENNIS CLUB ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Geraldine Tennis Club was held on Monday, Mr G. Glen presiding over an attendance of 20 members. Annual Report. The annual report stated that the courts had been officially opened by the Mayor (Mr B. R. Macdonald) on October 20, a most successful season being experienced by the members. The membership was slightly less than the previous season, but this had not detracted from the enthusiasm shown in the club. Although the club did not enter a team in the South Canterbury competitions, it renewed its affiliation in order to enable members to compete in the New Year tournament held in Timaru. The affiliation was again renew r ed with the Town and Country Association and in this competition the club entered a team. Although not the winners the team acquitted themselves creditably. At the beginning of the season the committee set earnestly to work to have the courts top-dressed. Tenders were called for, and the work immediately started by Mr Daly who completed it in good time for the opening day. Slight repairs had yet to be completed by the contractor and the work was now in hand. A cup for men’s handicap singles given by Mr C. S. Davies was won by G. Glen, and the trophy given by Mrs G. Glen for the women’s handicap singles was won by Miss M. Symington. During the season the club held a tournament on the courts, resulting in Miss M. Grant winning the women’s event and C. Stringer the men’s. Friendly matches were played with Te Marae Tennis Club, Ashburton, Fairlie Club, and Pleasant Valley and were thoroughly enjoyed. During the season two dances were held; the first which took the form of a fancy dress dance was held in November, and resulted in a very satisfactory credit balance. The second held in February was also successful. The balance sheet showed a loss on the year’s working of £7 9s 6d, but a credit balance carried forward, left the club with a credit of £7 3s Id. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the president expressed appreciation of the splendid work of the committee during the season. A sum of £l6 16s had been expended in the purchase of balls and the levy had brought in £ll 9s 6d. At the beginning of March the position had been realised, and the committee decided to go ahead with the distribution of balls. The committee knew that the levy receipts would not be sufficient to carry on the distribution of balls till the end of the season, but felt that it would be the fair thing to the members to carry on. An amount of £1 14s 3d received from the dance committee had helped to make up the shortage which was not very serious. Mr G. I. Plimmer had been responsible for the distribution of balls, and he had been thoroughly conversant with the state of the finances, and it had been through him that the possible shortage had been brought to the notice of the committee and a meeting held. The motion was seconded by Mr A. Jones.
Mr H. W. W. Williamson congratulated the treasurer (Mr A. Jones) for his able presentation of the accounts. Mr Williamson inquired how the valuation of the pavilion was arrived at, and whether, in the event of the club vacating the premises, the Domain Board would allow the club anything for improvements. The president remarked that the balance sheet was a splendid one, and that no fault could be found with it. The valuation of the pavilion had been brought down for many years. The club held no lease of the pavilion, and, consequently, if it w’as asked to vacate the courts, there would be no compensation for improvements. However, he did not think that anything like that would happen.
Dr. P. W. Hislop congratulated the Club on its position. It had come out with a small loss on the year’s working, but the position was satisfactory in view of the expenditure on the courts. He did not suppose the Club had any hold at all, but taking it all round the Domain Board would deal fairly by the club.
The motion was carried. In connection wdth the afternoon teas Mrs E. P. Bennett presented a balance sheet which showed that the receipts had amounted to £6 16s, and the expenditure to £6 3s 3d. The president remarked that the afternoon tea arrangements had been a source of worry till a levy had been instituted. A great deal of credit w’as due to Mrs E. P. Bennett for the way she had controlled it. and he congratulated her and the ladies’ committee on the way they had carried out the arrangements. Election of Officers. The president, in intimating that he did not wish to continue in office and would not accept nomination for a further term, paid a tribute to the committee and to the club members for the manner in which they had supported him during the year. Mr M. R. C. Miller paid a tribute to the able manner in which Mr Glen had conducted the Club's affairs during the season, and a motion of thanks was carried by acclamation. However, Mr Glen’s objection was over-ruled, and he was elected unopposed to the presidency for a further year. The election of officers resulted as follow's:—Patron. Mr John Kennedy; president, Mr G. Glen (re-elected); vice-presidents, Dr. P. W. Hislop and Mr W. H. Jackson. Mrs P. Bennett; hon. treasurer, Mrs R. C. Miller; hon. treasurer, Mr A. Jones; club captain. Mr G. I. Plimmer; ladies’ secretary, Mrs E. P. Bennett; ladies’ committee, Mrs W. H. Jackson, Mrs L. Brenton, Misses Hislop, M. S. Kennedy, and P. Bennett; men’s committee. Messrs W. H. Jackson, G. I. Plimmer, C. McGregor. S. Drew, K. Woolhouse; hon. auditor, Mr H. W. W. Williamson; delegates to the South Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association. Messrs C. S. Hammond and F. Oxford (Timaru): delegate to the Temuka Town and Country Association. Mr W. H. Jackson. Three new members were elected, and one resignation was accepted with regret. It was decided to aifiliate w r ith the South Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association. and with the Temuka Town and Country Association. Levy and Subscriptions. After discussion, it was decided, on the motion of Mr G. I. Plimmer. to increase the ball levy from 6 - to 7 6. an amendment by Messrs W. H. Jackson and A. Jones that it remain at 37receiving only three votes. A sum of £4 was allocated for the purchase of balls for matches played on the Geraldine courts. Mr M. R. C. Miller raised the question that the subscription should be reduced. Last season, when the men's subscription, including levies, had been 38 6 there had been only 14 male members, and he felt that the high subscription was the principal reason. He thought that an increase in the number
of members with a lower subscription was preferable to a few members at a high subscription. After discussion, it was decided, on the motion of Mr H. W. W. Williamson and Mrs E. P. Bennett, to recommend to the committee that the subscription both men’s and women’s, be as low as possible contingent on financing the Club satisfactorily. The opening day, and the erection of a wind-break at the south end of the pavilion were left to the committee. Votes of thanks were extended to Mr J. H. Lewis, in appreciation of his having audited the balance sheet, and to Mr W. H. Jackson, the club’s delegate to the Temuka Town and Country Association. ORARI RIFLE CLUBS.
