SIEGE BY BANDITS
UNCERTAIN FATE OF EIGHT AMERICANS. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received August 27, 6.30 p.m.) PEKING. August 26. Silence has settled on the fate of the eight Americans in Yuanchow, which has been besieged for two months by bandits pressing the town, the defenders of which are reported to number two thousand, with a year's supply of rice. The American authorities are redoubling their efforts to obtain safe conduct for foreigners. The siege was precipitated by the bandit chief's abortive plot to murder the visiting Governor-General.
