Celtic were 13 points down at the interval, but thev showed splendid form in the second half, and secured a converted try right on time to make the final score 19 all. On No. 1 ground at Fraser Park. Zingari produced them best form of the season, and secured an easy victory over Old Boys. Temuka just managed to get home by one point from Waihi, the final totals being Temuka 11, Waihi 10. Point also had a narrow win, beating Geraldine by 6 points to 3. STAR 1? v. CELTIC 19. Celtic did most of the early attacking and Morrison forced following a strong Celtic forward rush. The Green packmen continued to make the pace with solid thrusts, but Star returned to half way. Adkins, Ramage and McVey rushed to Celtic's territory, a scramble ensuing in front of the posts. Celtic were penalised and Provan opened the scoring with an easy kick. Star 3, Celtic 0. Further points came Star’s way a minute later when Donaldson kicked from his own 25 and ran past Delury to touch down wide out. The same player made the score: Star 8, Celtic 0. Kelly and Collings broke away cleanly from a loose scramble at half-way and several forwards handled. The ball was thrown to Gonley, the five-eighths using his pace to advantage before sending Daly over wide out. Delury’s kick failed. Star 8. Celtic 3. When Seaton found the line near the corner flag from a free kick, a scrum followed the line out. Star hooked and Greyburn set his backs in motion, Morrison, the full-back, being the last to handle and to score. The angle was against Donaldson. * Star 11, Celtic 3. Celtic forced following a strong Star rush, but the respite was only momentary, Star being awarded a penalty in their opponents’ 25. Provan’s kick missed. With the Celtic forwards in Star’s twenty-five, the Star backs were set in motion, the defence being unable to withstand a smart run by Boys, who sent Provan over near the posts. King converted. The half-time score was: , Star 16, Celtic 3. Star forced early in the second session, the Celtic forwards being responsible for good work. Gonley opened up well near half-way and the Green forwards carried on to Star’s twentyfive, where after a scramble, King failed to clear and McPhail scored a good try. Gonley failed to convert. Star 16, Celtic 6. Celtic maintained a hot attack and further points went astray when Galletly missed a field goal and Columb failed to take advantage of an easy penalty. With the Celtic forwards inches from the line a scrum was ordered. Columb secured from the forwards, and Gonley and Daly handled for the last named to notch a try. Gonley made the score: Star 16, Celtic 11. From scrambling play at half-way Celtic dribbled downfield and Gonley went over for a smart try. The angle was against. Delury. Star 16, Celtic 14. Combining well the Green backs and forwards penned Star in their twentyfive and another try looked likely. A Celtic forward picked out of the scrum, however, and Seaton found the line well upfield. Star who had seldom penetrated past half-way, then made a determined effort to open up play in the Green twenty-five. Here off-side by a Celtic forward, allowed Donaldson to goal from a penalty. Star 19, Celtic 14. Celtic carried all before them in a sweeping rush to the twenty-five, a kick by Rvan placing them near the corner. Here Celtic hooked from a scrum and Galletly threw a long pass to McPhail, who took a difficult transfer to cross. Gonley’s kick failed, but the referee awarded a free charge and the second attempt was successful. The game ended with honours in the second session to Celtic, with the scores: Star ID, Celtic 19. Mr C. Harding was referee. ZINGARI 27 V. OLD BOYS 13. Zingari were most aggressive in the early stages of the game, the forwards carrying play well into Old Boys’ twenty-five. Here the Blue backs gained possession, the ball travelling along the chain to Satterthwaite, who put in a good run before being pushed into touch at the centre flag. The Zingari forwards smashed through to the twenty-five, where K. Hall was penalised for off-side. Howey took the kick, and landed a good goal. Zingari 3, Old Boys 0. Play was of a most uninteresting nature until Marshall opened up from a scrum to Stowell to Lawson, who ran 40 yards before stab-punting over Averis’s head. Marshall was handy and gathered in, but was solidly tackled right on the line. Zingari cleared, but were penalised. Lawson failing to make use of the opportunity. Zingari swe >t right down the paddock, McKenzie being prominent, but Bishop brought off a smart save. Zingari continued to press, but K. Hall intercepted nicely, and on reaching Averis, sent out to Wishart, who scored between the posts. Lawson converted. Old Beys 5, Zingari 3. Old Boys were hard-pressed for a and from a scramble on the line. Rodgers picked up and dived over in a handy position. Howey converted. Zingari 8, Old Boys 5. Zingari continued to hold the upper hand, but the Blues eventually found relief in a penalty. Graham was too anxious, however, and Zingari regained the lost territory. K. Marshall sent his backs away, the line handling for Satterthwaite to race over wide out. Lawson’s kick missed. Old Boys 8. Zingari 8. There was no further score at the interval. Within a minute of resuming Zingari were in Blue territory. Bishop failed to vet in his clearance, and Wilkinson picked un and dived over for an easy try. King’s kick fell under the bar. Zingari 11. Old Roys 8. Plav cann’ back immediately to the Blue line, but a penalty brought Old Boys much needed relief. The Zingari forwards were definitelv on top at this stage, and they took full advantage of the tight breeze which was blowing. A scramble ensued on the Blues line, and Dewar picking up smartly,

dived over on the open side. Howey added the extra points.

Zingari 16, Old Boys 8. Old Boys at this stage were playing like a beaten team, the basks displaying very little combination. Occasional rushes were staged, but they invariably broke down through faulty handling. After a period of uninteresting play, Marshall, Satterthwaite and Stowell participated in a movement which resulted in the last-named scoring. Strang placed the ball fairly between the uprights. Zingari 16, Old Boys 13. With a deficit of only three points. Old Boys made strenuous efforts to score, but it was their own poor play more than the defence of the opposition which kept them out. Profiting by poor handling by the Blues, McKenzie intercepted nicely and sent on to Dewar, to Simpson, who scored wide out. Howey failed to convert. Zingari 19, Old Boys 13. Zingarl’s next try came in exactly the same manner as the preceding one. The Blues opened up, but a dropped pass let Zingari through, Simpson scoring. Howey converted. Zingari 24, Old Boys 13. During the next 10 minutes Old Boys were on the attack, but Zingari reversed the position after a Blue back rush had broken down. McKenzie cross-kicked, and King took the ball in his stride to race over. He failed to convert his try, the ball striking an upright. Time was called with the scores: Zingari 27, Old Boys 13. Mr D. Johnson was referee. TEMUKA 11 V. WAIHI 10. Shortly after the kick-off, Duke narrowly missed with a penalty kick at goal from 35 yards out. Temuka kept up the pressure but bad handling spoilt their efforts. Hewson checked the White forwards, by gathering in the ball nicely to find the line at the 25 flag. Palmer broke away from a lineout to put Waihi on attack for the first time. He was well tackled by Solomon. Hewson centred, but off-side play by the Waihi forwards spoilt a likely chance. Good line-kicking by Horgan and Gaffaney drove Waihi back to their own line. The former narrowly missed with an attempted field goal. The Waihi forwards repeatedly cleared their line only to be driven back by excellent touch finding by Connolly and Gaffaney. Jamieson cleared well in face of a strong forward rush headed by A. Stewart. Gathering in a loose pass on his own 25 line, Blyth made a good opening before sending on to Gaffaney, to Solomon, to Horgan, who scored a fine try in the corner. Duke’s kick went outside. Temuka 3, Waihi 0.

The Green forwards carried play to Temuka’s twenty-five, where from a scrummage, J. Callanan broke away. His pass went astray, and a period of solid sorummaging on Temuka’s line followed. Waihi made several attempts to open up the game, but the inside backs handled indifferently. Palmer left the field with an injured shoulder, being replaced by Macdonald. From loose play, the ball went to Quirke, who made a good opening before sending on to Leonard, who crossed in the corner as he was tackled by Connolly. Taylor failed to convert. Temuka 3, Waihi 3.

A succession of kicks favoured Waihi, but good play by A. Stewart, Scott and Duke shifted the venue of play. Receiving from a scrum at half-way, Goodson sent the ball out to Blyth, who cut past the opposing five-eighths. He “dummied” the full-back and scored an excellent try in a handy position. Duke’s kick missed. Temuka 6, Waihi 3.

J. Callanan again headed a fine forward rush to Temuka territory, where off-side play by A. Higginbottom gave Waihi a chance, but Taylor’s kick missed the posts. Following a collision with Hewson, who was off-side, Gaffaney left the field with an injured no§e. He was replaced by Preddy. At half-time the scores were: Temuka 6, Waihi 3.

On the resumption, Temuka immediately attacked, but the opposition’s smothering tactics did not give them much leeway. Callanan and Gpie shifted play upheld where good work by Blyth and Solomon relieved a dangerous situation. Connolly, who was giving a splendid exhibition at fullback. further drove the Greens back with lengthy line-kicking. Headed by Taylor, the Waihi pack swept upfield only to be checked by Connolly. Leonard, who was injured in attempting to tackle Connolly, left the field and was replaced by L. Wood. Blyth was next prominent when he made a good opening. His pass to Preddy went astray, and the Waihi forwards smothered the movement. Following a torrid forward tussle in Waihi’s twenty-five, the referee issued a warning. Receiving in a passing bout, Solomon stab-punted, and, Preddy following up fast scored near the posts after a couple of Waihi backs had mulled the ball. Duke converted. Temuka 11, Waihi 3.

Temuka were soon attacking again. Goodson worked the blind side for Horgan, whose kick over the full-back’s head went over the dead ball line. Quirke beat the opposition badly in a run from his 25. Horgan getting back to grass him with a good tackle. Receiving from Earl, O’Neill beat the opposing five-eighths. He drew the full-back before sending on to Jamieson, who swerved past a couple of Temuka backs to score in a handy position. Taylor failed to convert. Temuka 11, Waihi 6.

A short kick by Solomon again had Waihi in difficulties. Blyth went through the five-eighths nicely before being smothered by the forwards, and then Connolly attempted a field goal without success. J. Callanan was again prominent in a rush that eased a dangerous situation. O’Connor made a good run up the line, but Solomon missed his pass. Eventually Waihi forwards carried play to Temuka’s line, where O’Neill sent out to Jamieson, who, when hemmed in “potted” a neat goal. Both sets of forwards staged a willing battle in midfield until time was called shortly afterwards with the Temuka 11, Waihi 10. Mr A. B. Rowlands was referee. PLEASANT POINT (6) v. GERALDINE (3). Geraldine kicked off and took up the attack. From a line-out Point secured, and Wilson gained a lot of ground with a kick, but the Geraldine full-back cleared. Ragged play saw Point force their way to the Geraldine end. The situation looked dangerous for Geraldine till D. Callanan took a free kick, but Wilson returned the ball. From a scramble in the corner Ryan forced his way over. Gliddon’s kick, a good attempt, fell short. Pleasant Po : nt 3, Geraldine 0. The Geraldine backs were away in a nice passing rush, but Wilson cleared with a splendid kick. Point set up a hot attack initiated by Waugh, but Mason managed to force. Point again swept down the field, but the defence held. Geraldine broke away, and a score was narrowly averted. From a mark Gliddon transferred play to half-way. Geraldine broke away and passed across the field, but Point broke through, a knock-on spoiling the chance. Thompson set up a fast rush, but A. Loach cleared with a splendid kick, and half-time was called with th° scores: Pleasant Point 3, Geraldine 0. Point attacked on resuming, and Halstead made a great attempt to

“pot” a goal. A scrambling attack saw Geraldine work play to Point’s twenty-five, Cartwright clearing. Geraldine broke away, D. Callanan passing to Stringer, to Angland, but offside spoilt the chance. Geraldine kept up the pressure, and a nice passing rush across the back line was spoilt by Mason kicking too hard. Play livened up at this stage, and Point made determined attempts to score, but the defence held. Stewart and Wilson made a spectacular dash, but Cain brought his man down. L. Neutze made a splendid break through and passed to S. Callanan, to Mason, who was forced out. Geraldine kept up the pressure, till a free kick taken by Cartwright relieved. A minute later D. Callanan scored a dramatic try from half-way with a spectacular sold effort, fending off several defenders, but S. Callanan’s kick just fell short. Pleasant Point 3, Geraldine 3.

R. Gliddon broke through with a fast attack, but the movement broke down. Cartwright kicked a magnificent penalty goal from about 10 yards inside half-way. Pleasant Point 6, Geraldine 3. Point counter-attacked hotly and carried play to Geraldine’s corner, where the ball went out. From an infringement Neutze kicked to half-way, and Geraldine followed up the advantage with several solid attacks, but Point forced their way through to Geraldine’s twenty-five, -where offside play saw Cartwright’s penalty kick fall short.
