WAIMATE

WELCOME RAIN. After a spell of dry weather lasting five weeks during which time 33 frosts were registered on successive mornings, a steady rain commenced to fall in Waimate at 7 o’clock on Thursday. By 9 a.m. yesterday 38 points of rain was registered at the Observatory, and a good steady rain recommenced about 1 p.m. In most parts of the district the moisture will be heartily welcomed by farmers, as on light lands the effect of the dry spell was becoming acutely felt. The rain has come at an opportune time to give a start to spring sown grain crops, etc., the putting down of which is practically completed in most parts of the county. OVERCOATS STOLEN. During the progress of the Old Boys’ Football Club’s dance, which was held at the Olympia Hall, on Thursday night, no fewer than four overcoats were missing when their owners prepared to return home after the function. No coats were left in place of those taken, and it is presumed that the thieves purloined the garments in preference to getting a wetting from a steady downpour of rain which was falling at the time. Two of the overcoats were of the more expensive variety, one. being of leather, and the other a tailor-made garment. RUGBY TROPHIES. Following is a list of the trophies presented to the winners in the various grades in the Waimate Rugby SubUnion’s competitions by the Mayor (Mr G. Dash) at the conclusion of the seven a-side tournament at Manchester Park on Thursday afternoon: Sadler Shield (winners of senior championship), Huimai Club; junior challenge shield, Glenavy Club; third grade challenge cup, High School Club; senior A seven a-side challenge cup, Marist Club; senior B grade, seven aside, Southern Club; junior grade, seven a-side cup, High School Club; third grade seven a-side cup, High School Club. PERSONAL. Mr andyMrs C. D. Taaffe, Hastings, are the guests of Mrs A. M. Taaffe, Rhodes Street, Waimate.
