WAGE PROTEST

HOSPITAL NURSES. The Cook Gisborne Hospital Board unanimously decided to adhere to its former decision not to accept the Health Department’s scale of wages for hospital nurses. When a letter was received asking that the board to review its attitude, or at least apply the scale to new nurses taken on the staff, Mr. C. G. Bayliss said the proposals included the reduction of the wages of one class of nurses from £35 to £25 a year. That was a starvation wage, and he would oppose it as long as he was on the board. Mr. Howard Kenway pointed out that not only had a nurse to clothe herself and provide personal wants, but in Gisborne she required to save a certain amount for an annual holiday, which was more expensive to obtain from Gisborne than elsewhere. If the board applied the proposed rates to new nurses it would be regarded as the thin edge of the wedge, and before long the wedge would be driven right home. A resolution was carried reaffirming the board’s decision not to approve any lower wages being paid to the nursing staff.
