SWEPT BY FIERCE STORMS

HEAVY LOSSES IN UNITED STATES PROPERTY WRECKED AND MANY KILLED United Press Association —By Electrlo Telegraph—Copyright NEW YORK, August 24. Death, terror and destruction rode with the maddest storm to strike the Atlantic seaboard for many years. After yesterday’s fury, it roared up into New York State and the Great Lakes region to-day: as a 50-mile gale, with driving rain. Deaths are well over a dozen and the damage amounts to millions of dollars. The steamer Madison limped into Norfolk to-day, under her own steam, reporting that the second mate and quartermaster were swept overboard yesterday when they went on deck to investigate the damage by the first wave of the hurricane. Captain William Heath said the wave was the greatest he had ever seen. It tore away the forward house and wrecked much of the superstructure. There were 109 persons all told on board. They disembarked after a sleepless night, during which they wore lifebelts. Death and Destruction. The southern railway train, Crescent Limited, en route from New York to New Orleans, hurtled through the rainsoaked bridge spanning the Anacostia River, near Washington, early to-day, killing the engineer and fireman, and injuring 13. Eight were killed in Virginia. The damage to the Virginia beach alone is estimated at 1,000,000 dollars. The storm smashed the seashore resorts and marooned communities. The wreckage of small craft dotted the Atlantic coast line. There were serious traffic jams In New York City as a result of flooded highways and railway tracks and trees strewn on the streets.
