BOROUGH COUNCIL,

The Temuka Borough Council held its monthly meeting on Wednesday evening. Present—The Mayor (Mr A. W. Buzan), and Councillors G, Hancox, F. C. May, J. King, W. H. McMillan, I. W. T. Baxter, T. Dwan, W. F. Evans, A. e' Smith and E. Blackmore. Reference to the death of Mrs M. Mitten and Mr H. Boulter was made by the Mayor, and a vote of sympathy was passed to the relatives. On behalf of the Council, the Mayor extended a welcome to Mr L. Butters, the newly-appointed Town Clerk. Mr D. Louden, of Winchester, wrote applying for a water connection to his house in the Winchester township.— Consideration of the request was deferred. The Ttmaru Harbour Board offered quantities of 561 b and 401 b used rails for sale. The letter was received. Mrs E. Harrison wrote applying for the lease of a reserve lately leased by

Mr H. Boulter. A lease up to March 31, 1936 was granted. The application of Mrs A. E. S. D. Hopkinson for a permit to build a house in WUkin Street was approved, subject to the house being connected with the East Side drainage scheme. The traffic inspector (Mr W. R. Ashwell), reported that numerous cases of drivers using cars with dazzling headlights had been detected, and the owners instructed to have the lights adjusted. Arising out of the overseer's report Councillor Smith asked if the pipe-line of the Orari water supply had been completely filled in where it was uncovered near the intake. The overseer said that under the Mayor’s instruction about 12 inches of earth was filled in. Orari Water Works Report. Thr consulting engineer (Mr W. H. Stevens) reported o the Orari water supply. j •The report recommended a complete overhauling of the whole pipe line as well as an installation cf a suitable pumping plant at the intake r.t Orari at an estimated cost of £244. ■ it was proposed that the Town Clerk should take the necessary preliminary steps to obtain permission to raise a loan of £3OO. The resolution was not put, the Town Clerk recommending that the matter of raising the money should be left to the Finance Committee. It might be possible, he suggested, to do the work out of revenue. The Works and Hall Committee’s report was adopted, Councillor Evans remarking that it was the finest report yet presented by the committee. The inspection had clearly shown that there was plenty of work for the unemployed to do within’ the borough, without the necessity for sending them out into the country. Councillor McMillan stated that the Reserves Committee had had in mind the idea of sowing the fire-bell reserve down in oats and grass. The oats could be cut and they would afford good protection for the grass. It was decided to keep the ground worked up during the summer and to prepare for autumn sowing. Councillor McMillan moved that Mr Z. Kay be released from his promise to provide the seed in view of the fact that he was not going to have the use of the land in the summer. It was left to Councillor McMillan to interview Mr Kay and arrange for the supply of seeds. Councillor Blackmore moved and Councillor Evans seconded that the discount on promptly paid rates for the year be 33 per cent. The motion was carried, only Councillors McMillan and May voting against it. Domain Board. At the monthly meeting of the Temuka Domain Board the Federation of Women’s Institutes was given the use of the Domain on November 18 for the annual folk dance festival. In its report, the Visiting Committee recommended that a new mower for the croquet lawn be purchased. Jt was decided to take no action. In his monthly report, the curator (Mr A. E. Uden), stated that the staff had been engaged chiefly on planting out seedlings for the spring and propagating. Fifty Oregon pine trees had been replanted in the avenue along High Street, and extensive top-dressing had been done on the lawns. One hundred pines had been planted tn the sanitation reserve, and the gardens generally and the motor camp had been cleaned up ready for the summer. Gifts of manure and plants had been made by Messrs Hayhurst. Edgeler. Bu*an and the Gardening Circle of the Women’s Institute.

The report was adopted and a vote of thanks was passed to the donors. Councillor McMillan remarked that no mention of the proposal to plant a macrocar pa fence between the croquet lawn and the curator s house appeared in the report. The question had been discussed during the recent borough inspection, when it was decided to plant the hedge. The Mayor suggested that short shrubs might be better than a hedge, but the Board decided to adopt its former proposal.
