In an open letter which he has forwarded to the Minister of Agriculture (Mr C. E. Macmillan), Mr P. O. Veals, research chemist, o£ Hawera, tenders his resignation from the Special Dairy Committee appointed in March last. Mr Veale states that he has taken this step for the reason that, although the committee was set up to confer with and advise the department in the matter of the new dairy regulations, there had been no proper consultation with the committee at all. "The most serious aspect,” Mr Veale says, inter alia, “Is the fact that you and your department refuse to be guided, in a scientific way, by the scientists of New Zealand, particularly those of Massey College and the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. You are a law unto yourselves and apparently possess the power to bind the dairy producers of this Dominion with your opinions. When a motion aiming at giving effect to the emphatic recommendations of the research scientists Is proposed, your department records a block vote of four votes (including your own! against the proposal. I regret, therefore, that the continued opposition of your department to the unanimous recommendations of the united scientists and factory managers on the committee gives me no option but to resign and to explain my position to the dairy industry in the manner I have chosen."
