UNPAID BOROUGH RATES.

To the Editor of “ The Timaru Herald ” gi r .—in your issue of yesterday, a local news paragraph gives the startling information that over £BOOO is outstanding in rates. In the interest of those who have paid up, I desire to ask exactly what action is taken to persuade these defaulters to meet their obligations. How many of these professedly “hard-up'’ people possess wireless sets? That would be very interesting information for a start. In my opinion, many are just taking advantage of the present economic situation to sit back. Let the Council institute really drastic measures, and it, is most probable that the amount of arrears will be heavily reduced. We all know that there are some families genuinely “up against it,” but if legal action, to the extent of publication oi names were made, the money would “c found in lots of cases. The present position is scandalously unfair to the ratepayer who by careful, honest living, going without extravagances, meets his Just debts.—l am, etc., ANTI HUMBUG. Timaru, August 16.

WHAT IS THE LEGION POLICY? To the Editor of “The Timaru Herald” Sir —an observer writing from Europe remarks that a largo measure of Hitler’s success lay in the fact that he was all things to all men. To the workers, he talked Socialism; to the capitalist, he abused the workers; to the farmers, he promised lower rent and more protection; to the farm labourers, he promised better houses. The New Zealand Legion has produced one manifesto approximating very closely to Labour's platform, and many people are wondering whether the Legion too will be all things to all men; whether this first manifesto wall be followed by a series of manifestoes, many of them contradictory and incompatible, but giving the pgion propagandist a most varied selection of wares so that the exponent will re able to point out parts that will suit the fancy of every individual simpleton. In brief are we going to be treated to a varied hotch potch vote catching campaign.—l am etc MADE TO MEASURE. Kurow, August 16.
