Monday was the fifty-first anniversary of the opening of the Waimataital School, and to commemorate the occasion a social and dance was held in the Bay Tea Rooms. Mr T. Knowles, president of the Ex-Pupils’ Association, presided. The proceedings commenced with the school song, which was sung in rousing manner, and the following contributed to a most entertaining concert programme: Mr Sam Moore’s Orchestra, Mr Walter Leslie, Mrs H. Naylor, Mr J. Connors, Mr H. Naylor, Mr Fred Lewis, Mr G. H. Andrews, Mr R. R. Wills; accompanist, Mr J. Morgan. Dancing continued till midnight, and all present spent a most enjoyable evening and the general wish expressed was that the re-union would be made an annual function. A souvenir booklet of the jubilee celebrations was on sale.

The testing of the second gate in the diversion tunnel at Arapuni has teen carried out over the last few days, and so far (says the “Waikato Tiles’’) the apparatus appears to be in perfect order. It will be several days yet, however, before the tests are finished and the gate is fully tried. Mr T. Rabone electrical engineer in charge of the Auckland district, and several officials from Wellington, are on the scene and are studying the tests that .are being made. The gate, which is of a similar type to the No. 1 gate, is some distance further along the tunnel and has been installed for an emergency. T 1 ; work of installing the additional gate was commenced some months ago, and was completed about the end of last month. In the power-house three units are running, and there has been no trouble with any of the turbines. The works, generally, are running smoothly, and the periodical testing of the bed of the head race is in operation.

In six recent months 50 representative Canadian stocks increased in quoted market values by some £250,UOO.OOO. Basic commodity prices are moving slowly upwards. Car loadings are higher, and railway earnings increased. Production of automobiles and newsprint are coming back, and more motor cars were built in May than in any one month for two years. Agricultural implement plants have increased operations. The textile industry is working at nearly 90 per cent, of capacity and is on a better basis than for many months. There has hjen a steady Improvement in the lumber industry, and the immediate outlook is considered more favourable than for some years. The construction industry still is lagging, and iron and steel are slow to feel the effects of the new trend. The number of unemployed has been a substantial decrease, and the usual midsummer recession in activities has been less marked than ordinarily. Chtr-e are still many problems, many dark spots in the business map, but the mover ent at last is in the right direction.
