FOOTBALL
REPRESENTATIVE GAME TO-DAY SOUTHLAND T. SOUTH CANTERBURY. The meeting of South Canterbury and Southland at Fraser Park to-day la expected to provide local followers of the game with splendid football The Southlanders, who on Saturday are to make a bid for the Ranfurly Shield when they meet Canterbury, have' this year assembled what has been described as a great side. Their team for to-day however, will not include three of the Shield backs, but the pack of big and fast forwards is expected to be the same as will play against the Shield holders. When Southland last played a match at Timaru en route to Wairarapa in 1929, they were defeated after a great struggle, by 17 points 10 14, while the year previously at Invercargill a South Canterbury touring team which defeated Otago, went down to Southland by a very narrow margin. South Canterbury’s representatives to-day are expected to uphold the past record of the district, and in spite if the fact that Southland this year have a big reputation, it is usually against strong teams that South Canterbury shines. The teams are expected to take the field as follow: SOUTHLAND. Q. Porter D. Bruce N. Mitchell R. Sutherland R. Smith R. Sharp R. Frampton R. Donnelly J. Mattingly C. George C. Pawson G. B. Purdue W. His two tries were a result of strong, determined runs. Fleming, who filled the full-back position, played a fine game, and saved his side with sure handling and 6ood kicking. The remaining .backs played good sparkling football.
