THE WEATHER. A frost on Saturday morning was followed by a perfect spring day. Bright sunshine continued again yesterday. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The chairman (Canon J. F. Coursey) presided at the monthly meeting Of the Geraldine District High School Committee on Friday evening. In reply to representations by the committee, the secretary of the Canterbury Education Board advised that it was not Intended to remove Miss Watt, of the secondary department’? staff, for the third term of the present year. The secretary of the New Zealand Student Christian Movement applied for permission to use the school for one week for the annual conference during the Christmas holidays. The application was granted conditional on the school being left in a tidy condition. The headmaster (Mr A. W. Tucker) reported that the attendance for the month was satisfactory. The roll number was 302, and there had been an average attendance of 286. A quantity of rabbit-proof netting was required for the protection of the school gardens, particularly at the secondary department. The committee decided to purchase the netting, and to apply to the Education Board for a grant towards the cost. The. balance-sheet showed a deficit of 4/8, and it was decided to hold a meeting to discuss the conducting of a fete to raise funds. Mr Hayward reported on behalf of the visiting committee, and it was decided to replace a broken window and to secure prices for sweeping the chimneys. Messrs Wright and Slmmonds were appointed a visiting committee for the month. INTER-SCHOOL BASKETBALL. The annual basketball tournament between the primary schools of the Geraldine District, held in ideal weather at the Geraldine District High School grounds on Saturday afternoon, was won by the Winchester A team which beat the Orari A team by 7 goals to 5, after a closely contested game. Winchester A won the A Section by defeating the Geraldine Kiwi team by 5 goals to 3. The Orari A team won the B Section with an aggregate of six points. The games were controlled by the teachers of the various schools. During the afternoon opportunity was taken to present the athletic cup won by the Hilton School at the Interschool sports last year. The presentation was made by the headmaster of the Geraldine District High School (Mr A. W. Tucker), who also presented the championship basketball cup to the Winchester team. The results were:— Section A. First Round—Geraldine Kiwi 7 v. Geraldine Tui 3; Hilton A won by default from Orari B; Winchester A 14 v. Orari Gorge 2. Second Round—Geraldine Kiwi 9 v. Hilton B nil; Pleasant Valley 5 v. Geraldine Hula nil; Orari A 6 v. Winchester B 3. Second Round—Geraldine Moa 1 v. Pleasant Valley 1; Orari A 19 v. Hilton B 1; Winchester B 1 v. Geraldine Huia 1. The Tripp Oup foursome, played on the Geraldine Golf Clubs links on Saturday, was won by Miss K. Kerr and A. D. Sharpe, 7 up and 6 to play. In the Kerr Quaich Bogey the best cards returned were:— D. Macdonald (9). 5 down. D. C. Williamson (11), 7 down. G. N. Feilden (14), 4 down. R. Patrick (14), 12 down. P. G. Withers (15), 7 down. D. J. Lack (8), 3 down. W. C. Webb (9), 1 up. E. P. Bennett (14), 6 down. FOOTBALL. The Geraldine Football Club’s fourth grade team was ready to take the field on Saturday when advice was received that the Pleasant Point team had defaulted. The Geraldine fifth grade team beat High School B. at School Park, by 6 to 5. W. McShane scored a try and P. Callanan added three points with a free kick for Geraldine. PLEASANT VALLEY DANCE. A dance organised to augment the Pleasant Valley Hall building fund proved a success. Music was supplied by an orchestra, extras being played by Messrs S. Drew and M. Gale. Mr T. Robinson was Master of Ceremonies. During the evening Mr J. Cox contributed a song. The winners of novelty dances were:—Lucky spot, Mr R. Robinson and Miss B. Hammond; Monte Carlos, Mr H. Cain and Miss M. Fergusson, and Mr M. Rooney and Mrs T. Robinson. “HANDLE WITH CARE. Owing to it being an unusually fine picture the management of the Municipal Theatre has decided to repeat the screening of “Handle With Care," a delightful comedy romance, featuring El Brendel and two clever juvenile “stars,” at a special session this evening. James Dunn and Miss Mallory play romantic roles and El Brendel, as the leader of a jazz band, provides the comedy. Between 500 and 1000 children furnish atmosphere for the picture in some of the scenes, but only Buster Phelps and George Ernest, who give a clever portrayal, have speaking parts. Good supnorts will also be screened. “Handle With Care” will be screened at Pleasant Point to-morrow evening.
