BROKEN DOWN
FREIGHT NEGOTIATIONS IN AUSTRALIA. Unlteu Piess Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, June 24. The freight negotiations between the shippers and shipowners have Broken down completely. The shipowners, it is stated, offered certain reductions provided the meat exporters entered into an agreement at those rates for twelve months. The exporters offered to accept the proposed rates for three months, but this offer was refused. A meeting of the Committee of the Meat Exporters’ Association decided not to enter into an agreement with the shipowners unless further reductions are made in freights. The secretary of the Association, Mr Smith, pointed out that Australian meat exporters are at a decided disadvantage by way of freight charges compared with New Zealand exporters, the differences being 7/3 per ton for beef, £l/2/- per ton for mutton, £2/14/- for lamb, and £3/2/3 for veal and pork. “The Daily Telegraph” says: “Shippers regard the situation as desperate, and there is talk of asking Mr Bruce to intervene with the principals of shipping lines in London.”
