“HOW I WOULD SPEND TEN POUNDS.”
What would I do with ten pounds, is the question you ask. Well, as the saying is, money is made round to go round; and, as we are living in very strenuous times, and winter is upon us, we need more firing, food and clothing. I must simply make it go as far as I possibly can. Firstly, as I have not been too well, I think I should take a few days holiday in the country. I would visit my aunt, whom I have not seen for a long time, and where I know a warm welcome will await me. That trip would just amount to 10s train fare, and while there, I must fathom what to do with the nine pounds ten I have left. A bright idea had just entered my head, and listen, Peter Pan, it is this. I shall make inquiries and find a family that are sorely in need of help. Ragged little children, with sad faces, and bare feet, trad their mother pale and worn, wondering where the next bite is coming from to keep body and soul together, and how to keep a roof over their heads. I would just put a five pound note in her hand to pay the rent, and order some necessaries for the home. With the other four pounds ten, I would buy the poor children warm clothing, boots, and a few toys for the younger ones. If there was any remaining money, I would give it to the sad-hearted mother, to keep for a rainy day. Thus would end my £lO, but I would be very pleased, as I would have had a holiday, and helped some poor ones in need. —“Foxglove,” Ivy Alma Mattingley, Timaru.
