PERIOD OF PERSECUTION

Early day battles bcticeen the Salvation Army and the authorities, were not without persecutions and penalties. One of the first conflicts in the Court was fought at Napier, when the officers were summoned for cornet playing and marching in the streets. No less than thirteen Salvationists were sentenced to forty-eight hours’ imprisonment.

At Gore other Officers served a term of detention. Not even the women Officers were left undisturbed, one Captain and her Lieutenant having to serve a term of imprison meat at Hastings.

A fierce battle for liberty was fought in the town of Milton, where the Mayor and Councillors took a decided stand against Open-Ait work. The fight was a strenuous one, and gave the Law Courts a good deal of employment. The result leas that tiro of flic Corps Officers were sent to prison for a month. But public opinion began to show itself, the newspapers gave considerable prominence to the case, and eventually the Minister of Jus tice cancelled part of the sentence, and the persecution gradually died away.
