WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

WINCHESTER. The monthly meeting of the Winchester Women’s Institute was held on Tuesday afternoon, when the president presided over a good attendance of members and visitors.

The president extended a welcome to Mrs S. Unwin, who was present to conduct the community singing which was held later In the afternoon. Miss M. Barker gave a demonstration on smocking. Miss Barker had on display some beautiful specimens of her work, which was much admired. The demonstrator was accorded a vote of thanks.

A general discussion was held re the birthday party to be held next month. Two committees were appointed. The entertaining committee comprises Mesdames J. C. South, G. Burborough, D. A. Pearce and W. Knight, and the supper committee, Mesdames J. S. Smith, W. J. Moore, G. South and Miss Barker.

A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Unwin for conducting the community singing. Mrs W. E. Knight was appointed a delegate to attend the Women’s Institute Conference in Christchurch next month.

Hostesses were Mesdames T. A. Deßenzy, W. E. Knight and Miss Wade.

CAVE. About fifty members att&ended the meeting of the Cave Women's Institute in the hall on June 14th, Miss Amyes presiding. After the Institute song was sung, a motion of sympathy was passed to Mrs Winter and her family.

The president thanked all members who had helped the Women’s Institute exhibition by sending in entries and cakes, and congratulated the members who had won prizes. Invitations to attend the Sherwood and Otipua birthday parties were read.

It was decided to ask all members to bring something to the July meeting for the Central Relief Depot. Miss Amyes was appointed delegate to attend the conference in Christchurch.

A roll call "Winter Puddings," proved very popular and brought forth some useful recipes. Songs by Mrs Fee were greatly enjoyed by all present. The hostesses served afternoon tea after which members had a happy time dancing Sir Roger. A competition for a bowl of chrysanthemums resulted—Mrs Brown 1, Miss Davidson 2, and Mrs Fitzgerald and Mrs Squires equal 3.

There were 22 entries for the knitted jumper or cardigan, and the judges Mrs Rich and Mrs Eagle) had a difficult task. Mrs L. Gray was awarded first place, Miss M. Scott second, and Miss I. Hunter third. An article made from three skeins of New Zealand wool was won by Mrs Brown first and second, and Mrs W. Little third.
