HOCKEY HINTS
CORRECT DRIVING As very few players know how to drive correctly, the following points about the stroke should prove helpful. The left foot should be about two feet to the left of the ball and level with it, the toe pointing in the direction where it is desired to drive the ball. The stick should be grasped near the end in both hands close together, and should be swung back until it is at the height of the hip. The drive is then made as in cricket, the eyes being kept on the ball until the stick actually strikes it. After the ball has been hit, the stick should be “carried through,” but not beyond the hip height. With such a swing the ball will be driven as far and as fast as required. Any further swung is unnecessary besides being a waste of time and energy. A remarkable feature of the play of the Indian team which visited New Zealand some years ago was the players’ ability to hit the ball powerfully without lifting or moving the arm. Wrist work only was employed.
The push stroke allowed in corner or in-field free hits is a stroke along the ground, and must not be confused with the flick shot or scoop stroke, both of which permit the raising of the ball above the ground.
